Microsoft team desktop app and web version is displaying a gear icon instead of my chats reading pane list. How can I resolve this issue?

Microsoft team desktop app and web version is displaying a gear icon instead of my chats reading pane list. How can I resolve this issue? My chat reading pane is not longer available and only showing the gears icon. If I get a new message, I will see the red 1 notifying me I have a new message however I dont know who that came from. This problem persists in the desktop app or in the web version. My personal account in teams is showing fine but as soon as I log into this profile, the same issue happens , irregardless on the laptop/PC. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling teams multiple times, several reboots, the repair in the my installed apps. I verifyed the setting in the chats and they look to be correct. It was working just fine yesterday morning and I was in teams and then all of a sudden i saw the gears icon and I have never been able to get my chats back. I called support twice and they couldnt help. I am not sure if I pressed a setting inadvertently or if an update hit a glitch but I cant get my chats list back. Please help. What can I do.

    Ok, I have experienced this issue almost 1,5 months now. I have tried everything - twice! But today, I changed my approach and the chat issue resolved itself somnehow:

    1. I logged out of my account in the TEAMS app.
    2. Went to "Installed apps" -> Microsoft Teams -> Advanced options
    3. Clicked on "repair"
    4. Clicked on "reset".
    5. Launched the TEAMS app again

    And now it works for me.

    Hopefully it will stay this way :D

    UPDATE 15 January 2025: Unfortuantely, it didn't last long. The issue still remains

    I have the exact same issue! Both on my Teams desktop app AND the web-based TEAMS. It's really odd.

    Hi Roger,

    First thank you for taking the time to assist. So, here is a screenshot. As you can see, if you are in chats, it is showing the gear icon and not showing my chats list but you can see the last person you chatted with when the conversations pops up. Its just that reading pane is completely inaccessible. The areas such as Activity is showing fine. I had to separate the teams and chats because the issue first occurred when they combined and then I did not have access to my teams and channels. After I separated them, now I am to see my teams but i need to click a few places. From what I know, no one else in the organization is having the issue. And lastly, I went into Installed Apps> and reset teams at least a dozen times. I believe that clears out the cache. Hope this helps. If I hid something somehow, I am not sure how to unhide it. I really dont know what I did to cause this or if it some kind of glitch. Once again, any advice would be much appreciated. Please help! :-)

    Hi. I am suddenly having the same problem. It is only happening to me at work, but it affects both my desktop PC and my laptop. I have cleared all info, uninstalled, reinstalled, and still see the same icon on the left as described above.

    I am truly sorry for the inconvenience this issue has caused you. Based on the description, I understand that the chats reading pane has disappeared in Microsoft Teams. Instead, a gear icon is showing. The issue is happening in both Teams desktop client as well as the Teams web version.
