sporadic issue where a user "accepts" a meeting invite from an organizer and the invitee's mailbox sends the same "accepted" email notification over and over to the organizer.

I am seeing a sporadic issue where a user "accepts" a meeting invite from a meeting organizer and the invitee's mailbox keeps sending the same "accepted" email notification over and over to the organizer. The repeat notifications continue to be generated continuously even after the meeting has happened.

The only way I have found to stop the "accepted" emails is to have the meeting organizer either delete the event entirely and recreate it, or remove the specific user that is generating the messages and simply not invite them again. Neither one of these are good solutions, i'd like Microsoft to dig in and see what the root cause is.

See the image of a message trace I ran the last time this happened to one or our users. It shows the same "accepted" email being sent by the same mailbox over and over to the original meeting organizer. And the image is just 1 morning of a longer time frame. If we just let it go, hundreds or thousands of emails would have been sent in total.

    • Exchange Online
    • This has happened to multiple users, so it's not isolated
    • The user has new Outlook client on their work PC
    • It seems the device does have an impact on whether multiple emails are sent or not, details below
    • The issue is not add-in related as I have seen it occur with no add-ins installed on a client
    • I have been unable to get the client version thus far, will provide it as soon as I can

    **Additional Info**

Since my initial post, I have determined at least one cause of this issue (not sure if there are multiple causes yet). One of my users accepted a calendar invite on their iPhone (via the default Mail app) and by accepting, the event gets added to the default Calendar app. Now, every time she opens the calendar app on her phone, a new "accepted" email is generated and sent to the organizer. The user has her work 365 account added to her iphone as an account in settings, that's how the Mail and Calendar apps are syncing.

So, I can't tell if this is really an issue on Apple's side or Microsoft, but its unfortunate because I have little hope that they will work together on a solution.
