Outlook deletes two emails when only one email is selected to delete

Hello,

MANY recent and annoying issues with Outlook. This is one--it deletes 2 emails when one is selected.

Another amazingly annoying issue is when I open an email I never know if it will delete itself, open in a full-screen mode, or open in a window. WHERE I select OPEN on the line SOMETIMES determines the result and sometimes does not.

Another issue is that when I select TRASH, sometimes I get the trash from the day and sometimes I get only the last item I chose to delete.

Since I have been using OUTLOOK for 10 years and these issues are fairly new (last 8-10 months) and I have not changed ANYTHING except OS (XP to 7) and laptops over the years, I have no idea why these issues have begun.

By the way, MS says they don't support 7 any more, yet about 3-4 times a year I get updates, so not really a thing. Since I am a retired home user who does email, comments on 2 or 3 car forums, and watches a u-tube video every now and then, there is no obvious benefit for draining my wallet to upgrade my OS. 7 is just fine for what I do.

Cheers!

    Hi, Vince,

So sorry it took me time to get back on this. I had a medical emergency and finally got it solved.

Unfortunately, it was 100% a failure of my M310 mouse.

Hard to believe, but I replaced it (hard to find a mouse that works on Windows 7 PRO these days...) with their M185 mouse this morning and all is well again.

I can now select the box in Outlook and a check-mark appears instead of the email opening, I am not deleting multiple emails, and my reading panes are opening as set in tools.

I have never had this happen before, and this is my second wireless mouse. I almost plugged in one of my corded mice left over from the old days, but this one was inexpensive and fixed all these issues.

I can't comment on the same issues others might be having, but check your mouse; it might be causing them.

Thanks again for your help on this. I do appreciate it.

    Cheers,

    Richard

    Hello, Vince,

First, thank-you very much for your detailed reply. I will try all the suggested fixes you list and let the community know if they were successful.

The only one I have tried is in the TRASH folder a week or so ago and it was successful so far. I have, I think, adjusted the reading pane options, but will check them out again.

I understand that using an unsupported OS is not ideal and may have to upgrade as I am thinking about going back to work remotely and want to be in sync with any employer's system(s). Being retired, budget is an issue right now, but we will see.

Anyway, thank-you again. I will post after completing the tasks you list.

    Regards,

    Richard

OK, Thanks again. I haven't had time to get to the fixes yet, but will post when I do.

    Regards,

    Richard

    Hello! richopp

    Thank you for the reply!

Yes technically outdated version of Windows can't support Microsoft 365 Outlook. If you are using Outlook lower than 2013 then yes you can still use it however there will be some features that are not available in the lower versions.

I understand that you can't update your Windows 7 to Windows 10 due to some circumstances. Yes please let me know if it works.

    Thank you,

    Hello! richopp

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community

I understand that you're experiencing issues with Outlook. Regarding the issue where two emails are being deleted when only one is selected, this could be caused by a glitch in the software. Allow me to ask:

    • May I know how do you access your emails? is it through Outlook.com (web)? Outlook application (included in Microsoft 365 subscription)? New Outlook for Windows? Classic Outlook for Windows (Windows Mail app)? Outlook application for mobiles?
      • I would like to know what @domain and who is hosting your email account? example for @domains: Gmail.com, Yahoo.com, Outlook.com/Hotmail.com
      • May I know if the account is for Work/School use? or Personal (Hotmail/Outlook.com) use?
      • May I know what email configuration is your email account in Outlook? is it POP/IMAP? Or Microsoft Exchange?
    • Is this happening to all email accounts?
    • Can you see the changes in the Webmail host of your email accounts?

I recommend trying to repair your Outlook installation by going to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Microsoft Office > Change > Repair.

As for the issue with emails opening in different modes, this could be due to the reading pane settings. You can adjust this by going to View > Reading Pane > Right, Bottom, or Off.

Regarding the issue with the Trash folder, it's possible that you have different views set up for your folders. You can try resetting the view by right-clicking on the folder and selecting "Reset View".

Lastly, while Microsoft may no longer provide support for Windows 7, they may still release security updates for it. However, it's important to note that using an unsupported operating system can leave your computer vulnerable to security risks. It may be worth considering upgrading to a newer operating system for added security.

Yes please not e that Windows 7 is out of support you can check this information in this link: Windows 7 - Microsoft Lifecycle | Microsoft Learn

    I hope it helps!
