Figure/Table numbers disappear

I have a number of short documents that each contain a few figure/table captions. I made the mistake of trying to print them all without doing it through Word (i.e., I selected them in Windows explorer and clicked "print"). Now there seems to be some kind of corruption, because the numbers to the Figure and Table captions are gone. In some of the documents they were still there when I opened the file, but as soon as I went into Print Preview in preparation for printing, they all disappeared, and weren't in the printouts.

I did see one person mention this problem online, but it looked like she attributed it to an interaction with SharePoint. I have SP, but am not using it at all for this. However, I'm guessing it was caused by trying to print the files from outside Word.

Anyone know whether I can get the captions back without rebuilding them? I have tried restarting my computer but no luck.

    Hi,

As I understand you are facing issue wwith the table and figure captions.

Are you working with a large document?

This could be an issue with the document corruption. Try repairing the document and check if it helps.

Note: Take a backup of the file.

    Hi,

Please follow the suggestions in the following KB article to troubleshoot problems that occur when you start or use Word and check if these steps ( including renaming normal.dot) will help you in resolving this issue.

No, I have tried repairing the documents and it doesn't help.

I was able to restore the documents last week from another location. However, this has just happened AGAIN and I don't have anywhere to restore this second set of documents from. I would really like to figure out what's going on. Note that this time I did not try to print the documents from Windows Explorer, but instead tried to open a few documents at once (from Explorer), and the error occurred once those documents had all opened up in Word.

I believe it has something to do with the normal.dotm file, because both times when the corruption happened, I got a message about the normal.dotm (something like "unable to save normal.dotm since it's in use"...can't remember exactly). I was not trying to do anything with the normal.dotm, so this shouldn't have happened, and I have only seen this error the two times this corruption has occurred.

I don't want to restore the original normal.dotm, because I have a large number of customizations (keyboard shortcuts, macros, etc.) and don't want to lose them all.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Jen
