On 1 October 2025, Language Understanding (LUIS) will be retired. Starting 1 April 2023, you will not be able to create new LUIS resources. All your existing LUIS resources and applications will continue to be fully supported until the retirement date. You can migrate your LUIS applications to the next generation service conversational language understanding, a capability of Azure Cognitive Services for Language.

We are currently using LUIS especially to identify the Intents and entities. What to confirm my understanding that till Oct 2025, the ability to add more words to the existing intents and entities will still exist. New intents and entities can also be created within the existing instance. It is only the creation of the new instance that will not work from April 1st 2023. Please confirm.

Also for the benefit of all , can you please elaborate more on what will not work after April 1st 2023.

We're looking for the same clarification. In the official announcement, it clearly only mentions that "you won't be able to create new Language Understanding (LUIS) resources." I noticed it does NOT say "applications". So does this mean that if we have existing Authoring resources created, we can continue to create NEW applications in those resources all the way until October 2025? Or will we NOT be able to create new "applications" too, starting in April 2023? This is very important to clearly explain to the community.

FYI I submitted a ticket to Azure support and they confirmed we can continue to create new "apps" in existing resources as well:

Yes, you could create new applications that uses the resources that are already created. Only the resource creation is going to depreciated for now.

I currently have a working c# server solution that uses the Cognitive Services Speech sdk and the LUIS authoring portal as described in this doc and elsewhere. I am trying to upgrade my solution to use the newer Cognitive Language Understanding Service and cannot see how to connect the speech services sdk to the newer cognitive language service. It appears as though the speech service has yet to be updated to reflect the LUIS changes. Is there any plan to update this? April is coming soon and we need to find a solution.

I'm am trying to migrate my Intent recognition solution from using Speech Services & Luis to using Speech Services & CLU. The docs etc. have yet to be updated, can I get an answer if it will still be possible to detect intents from audio input using Speech Services and CLU?

Now that there are less than 10 weeks until the first deadline, will any of the questions in here also be answered somehow?

At least that's what you promised over at this Microsoft learn page: "If you have any questions that were unanswered in this article, consider leaving your questions at our Microsoft Q&A thread."

I'd appreciate it, if we could have some more clarity on how CLU will for example cover the same things LUIS offered, especially since you call it the next generation of LUIS.

I honestly can't believe that in just about two weeks, the "[creation of] new LUIS resources" will be restricted and we still have no clear information about what exactly will be affected. This lack of communication is extremely frustrating and unprofessional.

Can someone in charge please provide us with a detailed explanation of the resources which will not be abled to be created anymore in April? Is it conversation apps specifically, is it speech resources in azure, is it about authoring resources or all of this? It's crucial for us to be informed and prepared for the impact of this degradation of the service.

@sebastian-iaodew Starting 1 April 2023, you will not be able to create new Language Understanding resource(LUIS) only as below screenshot, you can still work on your existing resources.

There is some update in the migration document about what is in Language Service, what is not as below table - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/cognitive-services/language-service/conversational-language-understanding/how-to/migrate-from-luis?tabs=luis-portal#comparison-between-luis-and-clu

Please go to the document and take a look.

For your next question - Is it conversation apps specifically, is it speech resources in azure, is it about authoring resources or all of this?

It's only LUIS classic resource, speech resource will not be affected. I hope this helps.

What will happen to Azure Custom Commands? Custom Commands create LUIS resources in the background. Will new custom command projects create Conversational Language understanding resources in the background instead or LUIS? Please can you give a definitive answer? Many thanks.
