I have filed 5 bug complaints about this, but have received no fixes or feedback.
In Windows 11 Developers build, I have set OpenSSH Server to start automatically. I use this to connect from my Mac. It is MUCH faster than smb.
But after every Windows update, OpenSSH is set to manual and is not started. One would think this would be an easy fix??

In Windows 11 Developers build
Isn't there a separate forum where you can post issues with the developer build? Is that the same as the "Insider Preview Build"? I am not familiar with those builds. Have you tried it on a "normal Win11 OS"?
Yes, it is Insider's Build. Updates weekly.
The right place should be the Feedback app. I have filed this 5 times with no fix.

If you rely on this pc for your business (or something other than testing new functionality in Windows), then why are you using an Insider Build version of the OS? You're essentially using a beta version, or maybe call it a pre-release version of the OS. And if each build update resets some services back to their defaults, then that would not surprise me. Why don't you use the RTM version?
Because I need features such as subsystem for android and Linux. And it is the platform to report bugs before they are released!
Then define a scheduled task to run that Powershell script at startup to start/config the service.

This bug is in the stable channel already, so using that wouldn't have helped.
I'm running Win11 21H2 [Version 10.0.22000.1042]. This is not an insider build. I have installed the sshd service and will monitor it's status the next time that I install any updates.
I am not familiar with the Insider program. So my initial thought is that maybe the reason that James did not get a reply to his 5 bug reports is that this is not a bug. If MS is delivering a new build, they may intentionally reset the status of services.
Is this new behavior? Did the service stay start=auto in the past or is this something new?

So if this is a bug or a "feature" in the Insider program, then I don't think that posting here is the preferred place to reach the folks that need to know that they might have a bug.
My laptop just installed KB5018418. The sshd service is running and is set to start=automatic.
I updated one of my laptops to 22H2 and the sshd service was reset from automatic to manual startup.
Running the Powershell script at startup to start the service appears to be the best solution at this time.
It is NOT a bug in OpenSSH. It is a bug in Windows 11 services app. Services does not remember its OpenSSH Settings.

Happened to me, I just noticed today. I was unable to access my computer via the OpenSSH Server service. Has been working fine for two years before, without maintenance. Unfortunately, as I only use this occasionally, (only when there is an emergency at work, guess how surprised I was that it just stopped working), I cannot pinpoint the exact update or date, but it broke down in the past month.
It only works now if I set the service to "Log On As" "Local System". Back in the day, I created a dedicated local user on this system to run the OpenSSH Service as, but it doesn't work anymore. I wonder if it has something to do with the other issue, where Credential Guard prevents RDP to use the saved passwords by default. This just happened to me via a windows update. I'm not running an insider build. OpenSSH Server did not start up and was reset to manual. Windows update just updated me to 22H2 installed on 10/5.
It is a BUG. Why. can't someone from Microsoft address this?
Microsoft has demonstrated many times that they do not care about individual bug reports. They only care if some news outlet picks it up.
