Unread mail count stays unchanged when emails are read

Emails that are marked as read in shared mailbox does not change the count of unread emails. The message handling in mail settings is set to 'Mark displayed items as read when the selection changes'. The issue is with outook.office.com, not with the outlook app. Please help, thanks.

What's your account type, is this an O365/Exchange online account or a hotmail account (like outlook.com ...?)
And do you mean the issue only occurs in web rather than outlook client? Have you tried using "mark all as read" to see if any help?

Yes its an O365/Exchange online account.Yes, it only occurs in web, not the outlook client.
I haven't tried marking all as read, there are many users for this shared mailbox and this could make them miss the ones they have to work on.
When it is marked as read in outlook client, the number of unread mails get instantly updated in the web client as well but not the other way round.

I did a test in my environment, the status of the emails in shared mailbox will be changed and synced when using OWA, it can work properly.
Could you please try creating a new shared mailbox and verify the result again? Then we could confirm if this issue is related to a specific account or your organization backend.

Its a weird thing, today the users who complained about this issue say it is working now.I don't have the privilege level to create shared mailboxes. Settings are currently as follows:-
OWA settings:
mark as read: mark displayed items as read when the selection changes
unread filter: checked - always keep items unread unless i explicity mark them as readOutlook app settings:
unchecked are:
mark items as read when viewed in the reading pane
always preview messages
checked: the other three items -

The same configuration in my OWA, I would like to confirm which method did you use to access the shared mailbox in OWA, use add shared mailbox then access or use open another mailbox?
And you could check if the results are same using both methods above accessing it.

In addition to change the way to access shared mailbox, you could also check if the same behavior when change other browsers. Which browser are you using now, check if it can be updated to the latest version?
