I am also having this issue. I have tried to open the .rpmsg with Outlook, but recieve an error "The program you have selected cannot be associated with this file tpe. Please choose another program. when trying to open a .rpmsg "

Only specified recipients can open RPMSG files in Outlook, otherwise it will throw an error - Gmail users who receive such will be directed to an Outlook page prompting you to login to the Gmail address of the recipient ONLY, after which you must select “allow”. For iOS/Android, https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/information-protection/what-is-information-protection

Concurrently, OWA must be enabled for the user, since they Outlook client no longer opens these within the client (resolves a link to their Outlook Web Access)

I was told when co-workers receive emails with these ".rpmsg attachments", it means "Go to your Teams app." I still don't understand. lol!!!

Another debacle by Microsoft. I work in the financial industry for a top tier company. We are receiving emails with these rpmsg attachment types. We cannot open them. We do have Outlook and Office 365. So far I have not been able to open them. In Outlook for example the attachment appears as a document in the view pane and it has a drop down menu. I click the arrow and select Open, but then greeted with the friendly message "Windows cannot open this type of message". Unbelievable! People in the banking industry are sending these attachments and they have no idea that they don't work for most companies on the receiving end!!!

Some folks are still using this attachment format in 2024. But the new outlook (Desktop) does not support this kind of attachment. What a complete failure.

I would call it a debacle! None of the proposed solutions work at all. We don't use Outlook as our default mail system. But I can't even forward the email from one of our users because the attachment is somehow locked by some form of user perm rights! I don't understand what MS was thinking when they rolled this out.

Hi Christy, I have the same question. My .rpmsg came in as an attachment on an email I RECEIVED IN OUTLOOK. It wouldn't open automatically in Outlook, so why would you say it can? Do we need an Outlook extension you forgot to mention?

I work in the financial industry and none of these solutions work. Additionally they violate compliance policies. We need to be able to save a copy of all correspondence especially from the outside. If people have to open a temporary link to a web page there is ZERO ability for us to get a copy that we can archive and also make it searchable for when the SEC calls and says "hey give us a copy of of all your emails from such an such to such and such". This does not work in the financial industry, which is a pretty big industry last time I checked!

I got this to work on Android

install Azure information protection app

open email and download the message.rpmsg attachment

use app called "CX file explorer", find the downloaded rpmsg and "open with" select "AIP" (azure information protection)

You can open an RPMSG file with Microsoft Outlook:

What is RPMSG file extensions?

RPMSG files are used to deliver e-mails with Rights-Managed Email Object Protocol enabled. This protocol controls e-mail access and usage permissions. Instead of a plain text, e-mails via RPMSG files are sent with content encrypted and stored as encrypted file attachment.

To open the file type:

To open RPMSG file in Microsoft Outlook you need to launch it and then select File->Open... in the main menu

I'm not familiar with Outlook, but managed to sign in to it. I do not see an option to select a file except to attach it to an email. What I get when I launch and sign in to Outlook is an email program.

This is absolutely not helpful since it is not possible to open single message files with outlook via file>open menu... Just misleading.

Hi Dillon, I received the same type of attachment (.rpmsg) in an email IN OUTLOOK. It would NOT open in Outlook. Do we need an "Outlook add-in", you forgot to mention???

This was not helpful at all Outlook will not open this .RPMSG file, using "File/Open". the only choices are to open a calendar file, .pst file, or other user's folder

Try using the web-based version of Outlook instead of the desktop version. It worked for me.
