How to create first-time tenant

Wanting to start a new project outside of work, I opened the Azure portal and signed-in with my personal email address. I found that this was linked to my work organisation, and as I don't want any resources I create to be billed to my work's account, I unlinked my personal Azure account from that directory.

Since then, anything I look at in Azure warns me that I have limited access because I am RESTRICTED TENANT.

How can I now set up a fresh, new tenant which has nothing to do with my work email/account? I have an organisation in devops for this purpose, I just can't seem to get the equivalent in the Azure portal - aren't / shouldn't these be somehow linked?

    Hello @Andrew Jameson

Thank you for posting this concern on this community space.

I was reading your post description and I want to share my 2 cents on this...

1-This is not expected but the only way I might think that can occur is because your personal account is linked as your recovery account for your work account, or another chance is that your personal account is used like external/guest user.

2-If you have any chance to create a new user on that tenant created using as onmicrosoft.com like the email domain.

3-You may create a new email account which is not what you expect but could be one way to get it working and when you are using this email account, by default will be the root/owner of the tenant.

I hope that works for you.

    Looking forward to your feedback,

    Cheers,

    @Andrew Jameson

When initially your personal account was linked with your work organization, you could have still created new Azure tenant. Just that your personal account might had provisioned in both the directories (work organization and also on your personal new tenant).

When you want to work with your personal Azure project you can just login to Azure portal and use the "switch directory" option to access the correct Azure project. If you create resources under your personal Azure project, your work organization will not be billed for it because these resources will be tied to a subscription which is instead linked to your personal project directory.

One directory can only be linked to only one subscription.

However, since you have already unlinked your personal account with your work directory, you can create new Azure tenant using your personal account itself.

Looks like the limited access is shown on your work directory. You can login to Azure portal with your personal account.

    • Click on your account name on the top right corner.
    • Click on "Switch directory"
    • Select the directory that you want to work on and then click on Switch.

Now you will be able to access your personal account directory.
