Saikiran Sheshagiri Thanks for posting your question in Microsoft Q&A. Based on the error message, you are using incompatible node.js version V20.1.0 and here is the doc for your reference Supported versions.

We are yet to support node 20 in Azure Functions and suggest you track items Support Node 20 and Request for: Node.js Version 20 support for latest updates.

Hi, I see this error in Azure functions core tools.

I am running NodeJS 18.X

Core Tools Version: 4.0.5095 Commit hash: N/A (64-bit)

Function Runtime Version: 4.16.5.20396

And here is the error from Azure functions core tools.

Saikiran Sheshagiri Did you set WEBSITE_NODE_DEFAULT_VERSION app setting to ~18 (WEBSITE_NODE_DEFAULT_VERSION)? You can validate the node version by logging process.version as described in doc Node version.

Thank you for additional details. I think we found the issue, someone included node version (20) in the package.json dev dependencies. Removing all references and cleaning up resolved this issue. However I have a question related to WEBSITE_NODE_DEFAULT_VERSION.

Do we have to set the WEBSITE_NODE_DEFAULT_VERSION for every function app that we build? Is it mandatory?

the process.version is responding with 18.16.0

Saikiran Sheshagiri For Windows, WEBSITE_NODE_DEFAULT_VERSION is created by default (not applicable for Linux) to indicate the default nodejs version but not mandatory. There is a discussion to move this node version to site config https://github.com/Azure/azure-functions-nodejs-worker/issues/221.
