SQL always on issue

I have a MSSQL Always on cluster and given listener to application team to configure in their application/connection string.
when I do manual failover their application stops working and gives error as follow.
Unable to access availability database 'XXX' because the database replica is not in the PRIMARY or SECONDARY role.
Anything is missing in configuration.
Note : witness is not configured.
