Login issues starting Outlook 2016 and logging onto a GoDaddy email account

A customer of ours has Microsoft 365 Email accounts purchased through GoDaddy. Set them up a few months ago and all was working fine until this morning when one of the users launched Outlook and was prompted to reauthenticate.

Problem occurs when logging on via the Outlook Desktop App (Office 2016 Standard, msi install with volume license all latest security patches installed) or via the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant.

With these applications, when the login flow redirects to the Go Daddy Sign in page, https://sso.godaddy.com then we encounter a script error:

/!\ An error has occurred in the script on this page Line: 0 Char: 0 Error: Script error. Code: 0 URL: https://tags.tiqcdn.com/utag/godaddy/godaddy/prod/utag.js Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?

Whether we choose Yes or No, the result is a slightly different script error. This time the URL is https://img6.wsimg.com/wrhs/a8e89bf4411d075374c68e9a22bd2d3e/tcc.min.js but everything else is the same. After that we are stuck in a loop, clicking Yes or No results in the same error all the time pointing the the img6 url. The only way to break out is to kill the process.

Can connect to webmail OK. Go Daddy have said it's not their problem as Webmail is working and we need to contact Microsoft. However since they redirect access to the https://admin.microsoft.com page to their own admin portal and clicking need help on the https://portal.office.com page goes to their own partner support details we have no means of logging a ticket online with microsoft. Go Daddy directed us to https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/topic/global-customer-service-phone-numbers-c0389ade-5640-e588-8b0e-28de8afeb3f2 and so spent an hour and a half listening to hold music from (0)344 800 2400 but no answer.

So I'm stuck between GoDaddy support that says the issue is with Outlook 2016 (Which they didn't supply) so not their problem and Microsoft support which is inaccessible.

I created a learn.microsoft.com account just to reply to this as I've fought this issue umpteen times with Outlook 2016 for years.

As far as I can understand, the issue is that the Outlook login popup window uses a half-baked version of Internet Explorer 11 and the GoDaddy login page serves Javascript it can't handle. I tried all manner of registry edits, HOSTS file edits, the works, but what ultimately did the trick for me was to go into Internet Options > Security > Custom Level > Scripting, and flipping Active Scripting to "Prompt." This will cause a pop up for each individual script the login page serves up, and you can test declining individual scripts until it lets you through. In my case I permitted the first one, but not the second one which allowed me to input user/password, then permitted every script after that, which crashed, but the auth took and reloading Outlook one final time allowed me in. Not exactly a user-friendly solution and, if you're reading this solution, this needs to be your final warning to get the eff off Outlook 2016 as there's no guarantee this fix will work forever.

    Hi @Matt Hardy ,

Set them up a few months ago and all was working fine until this morning when one of the users launched Outlook and was prompted to reauthenticate.

Judging from your description, there is no problem when configuring the account. This problem happened suddenly recently, right?

Will the problem be reproduced by creating a new profile? (control panel>mail>show profile>add) and add the account for testing to check if there are some differences.

In addition, please check whether the account linked in the Office application is an O365 account. Open any office application, click File > Office Account, make sure you are logged in with the O365 account.

If the script error doesn't occur with another user account, in another browser, or on another computer, the problem may be caused by files or settings on your computer. Below are some tips which might help to narrow down the issue for your reference in this article:

How to troubleshoot script errors in Internet Explorer
