In the username could you please try to connect using myemailid@companyname.com@your Azure SQL Database Private Endpoint FQDN.
It should be in the format.
myemailid@companyname.com@myprivatesql.privatelink.database.windows.net

I was looking how connect to sql server on Azure by IP Address (using VPN / Others Azure resources) and this comment from @Oury Ba-MSFT help me a lot.
All without modify any DNS record or host table on my PC. Only configuring a Private Endpoint point to my SQL instance.

Are you able to connect.?
On the server name in the connection screen, are you using a CNAME. It should be Azure SQL Sevrer FQDN that is in the Azure Portal.
