VERY POOR NETWORK performance for accessing Azure CDN in mainland China

September 19th, Beijing

Mainland China users accessing websites hosted on Azure CDN.

Users of all mainland Chinese carriers can no longer connect directly to the Azure Hong Kong data center:

1, China Telecom (AS4134) in many provinces via Japan NTT (AS2914) detour to Azure Hong Kong or Singapore (AS8075).

2, China Unicom (AS4837) although direct to Japan Azure, but the latency is very high, 50ms more than the previous Azure Hong Kong.

This caused network latency to surge to 150ms+ from the previous average of less than 50ms !!!!!!!!

All of these routes have very low QoS, with dramatic packet loss.

Is this a technical glitch, or is Azure no longer willing to pay bandwidth costs peer to ISPs in mainland China?

    @User-8593

    Thank you for reaching out.

    Can you please confirm your observation above is regarding Azure CDN Global and you have not configured Azure CDN China?

    As per the documentation here

    The network latency between China and the rest of the world is inevitable, because of the intermediary technologies that regulate cross-border internet traffic. Website users and administrators might experience slow performance. The following tips might help:

    • For websites with streaming media and other rich media content, the Azure Content Delivery Network (CDN) can help improve responsiveness. Under Chinese law, using the CDN service in China might also subject an offshore website to ICP filing. Don't use a global CDN service that doesn't have a point of presence (PoP) inside mainland China.
    • For the best user experience, host a website in China to serve users in China.

    Thank you! Please let me know if you have any additional questions. Thank you!
