Error downloading some updates 0x80004002

Question

Hi,
I get this recurring error in Windows Update since weeks. I tried every imaginable proposed solutions I found including restore health using DISM, SFC, Bits and other services check, different DLLs registered and checked and so one, but excluding Windows 10 re-installation or refresh. I do not want to have to reinstall my apps and programs. Other updates install OK. It's only stuck on these 3 (see picture). I can live without updating those 3. How can I stop windows to wanting to update those 3 items? PS: I also downloaded the packages directly from Microsoft Update but there is no executable within the CAB files. I also could not find anything in Device Manager that accepted to be updated by those packages.
Thanks for any NEW idea.
PS: in-between, I updated from v. 2004 to 20H2. Problem still the same.

You could try these methods:
Run the update Troublrshooter
Go the Settings>Update & Security>Troubleshoot.

Hi DaleKudusi-MSFT,
The troubleshooter(s) (as most of the time), did not found any problem. Did it at first, long time ago, and 2-3 times since then.
Using the downloaded troubleshooter in your link above, allowed to hide those 3 updates but that isn't a fix.
Now another update (KB4580419) rises the same error 0x80004002 after presumably have downloaded 10%. (see screenshot).
But this one, I can install manually from Microsoft Update Catalog site. I wish not to have to do this for the future...

Hi,
I’m glad manual installation worked.
Have you try restarting the Windows update services and clear the update download files?

You could try performing these following steps if this issue happens again:
Open an elevated command prompt and run the following command:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop appidsvc
net stop cryptsvc
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old
net start bits
net start wuauserv
net start appidsvc
net start cryptsvc

Also, you could perform a in-place upgrade to repair Windows 10 which keeps all apps, programs and personal data, as an in-place upgrade repair uses the same basic mechanism as when you upgrade.

Hi thanks again. Yes I did all that as mentioned in the first post. The manual install was only for that mentioned KBxx not the 3 driver packages that were hidden.
Unfortunately, an in-place upgrade is not possible because of these 2 given reasons:

1. you try to install windows in an non standard location (mine is c:\windows) very uncommon indeed
2. you try to install an older version. (my Windows is 20H2 and I just downloaded a fresh 20H2 ISO image for the install)

So I cannot do that in-place upgrade because of 2 nonsense reasons.

Hi, Thanks.

I managed to install 2 of the Samsung drivers (USB) and the Logitech driver by downloading them from MS upd. cat. I could do that because I used Device Manager and asked to update those devices (hidden & unbidden) that I thought may be linked to the downloaded drivers.
There was one left for which I could not find anything in Device Manager related to a Samsung Modem. I used pnputil to install all *.inf_s contained in the package.

The driver installation problem is now fixed (temporarily).

But Windows update still throws error 0x80004002 for the next update; a KB related to .net after showinf 10% then 30% download progress...
I sure can download and install it by hand but now I have to concentrate on fixing windows update generally.

I did not well understood your comments about in-place upgrade of windows and how to get past the 2 nonsense reasons why it do not accept it. (reboot done, same result)
