Updating apps via intune

I am currently a few versions behind on an application (Smoothwall), and I've been attempting to upgrade it. However, when using Superdence, the upgrade process doesn't seem to be effective. I've waited for five days and synced multiple times, but the issue persists.

If I attempt to install the newer version and add it as a group in the updated installation instead of using Superdence on the older version, the status shows as "Not installed." Interestingly, if I manually uninstall the old version from the device and set the newer version to install from Intune, excluding the old version, it installs successfully.

I'm wondering if there's a more efficient and less manual approach to updating, or if I'm overlooking something. Any guidance or advice would be greatly appreciated!

    @Aran Billen, Thanks for posting in Q&A. Based as I know, when superseding an application, it is important to ensure that each app has explicit targeting to take effect. Superseding apps that aren't targeted will be ignored by the agent. Additionally, only apps that are targeted will show install statuses in Microsoft Intune admin center. Therefore, please ensure the device is under the assignment of the old and new apps both.

    Meanwhile, please ensure the detection rule can detect different version of the app.

    Hope the above information can help.

    Microsoft is publishing new application management feature for upgrading and maintaining apps, it will be part of Intune Suite which is additionally charged. I am not sure, will it support any custom applications.

    In your case, since you are already using superdence, just thinking;

    1. Is your uninstall string for older version really working?
    2. Have you activated the uninstallation of old version during creating superdence?
