Suggestions for Cost Effective Backup Solution for Long Retention

Hi,

I would like to seek your suggestions for effective and cost efficient way to set-up a Backup that will handle the following requirements below:

Backup Retention Period 10 Years at least
Cold Backup
7 days Snapshot retention

We are fully on Azure, and currently we have IaaS set-up. I want to only backup the Data in 1 of the VM disk. I have checked Azure Managed Disk backup but this seems does not have a very long retentions as I have only maximum of 235 days.

Appreciate if you can suggest possible options and how much will it cost to backup 1Tb of data. Thanks!

I recommend you to use Azure VM backup

When you define backup policy, you can configure instant recovery snapshot and long term retention using "Retention of Daily backup point".

Thanks, this is actually what we are using right now, but since this were backing up the whole VM instead of only the data, I assume this will be more "costly" in the end? As we are also including the whole VM instead of data only? I am concern more for the cost as we will be keeping the data for at least 10 years.

Hi,

Azure VMs - Back up entire Windows/Linux VMs (using backup extensions) or back up files, folders, and system state using the MARS agent.

Hi @Sreeju Nair , I really appreciate your inputs, do you know which of the two will be more cheaper? Coz I have explore MARS as well and I didnt find any relative costing documentation in regards to that so I can compare to Azure VM Backup.

Hi @Champ, See when you use MARS agent and choose only to backup certain files / folders, then its cost will be less than the full VM backup cost.
