Are there any changes in Autopilot and Azure AD for AAD joined devices as I have observed that when we join the device to Azure AD that device gets added to Autopilot automatically even after removed from Autopilot, Intune and Azure AD?

Here is our situation : This comes in picture when I have situation where we have given devices to end users when they leave the company as give away those laptops to company leavers and we are concern about the device ownership, so if we give the ownership from company to those users then will those devices be removed from Autopilot and there wont be any entries in it as those were purchased on name of company and now we would be transferring the ownership to those company leavers.

@Vinod Survase, Thanks for posting in Q&A. Based on my researching, under Autopilot new feature, I didn't find this change.

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/autopilot/windows-autopilot-whats-new

Based as I know, if the device is removed from Autopilot, Intune, and Azure AD, it should not appear in Autopilot anymore. If you manual remove the Autopilot device, but the device still shows Autopilot after Azure AD join. I think this can be the device has not deleted completely. You can open case to check.

For the device ownership, it can be Personal or Corporate. For " if we give the ownership from company to those users", did you mean you change the primary user of the device? If yes, then the device will not be removed in Intune or Autopilot. It only changes the primary user who use the device. To delete Autopilot device, you can follow the steps in the following link:

    https://www.prajwaldesai.com/delete-windows-autopilot-device-intune-entra/

Note: Non-Microsoft link, just for the reference.

For your scenario, you can also consider Autopilot reset to takes the device back to a business-ready state, allowing the next user to sign in and get productive quickly and simply.

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/autopilot/windows-autopilot-reset

Hope the above information can help.

Sounds like there is an autopilot profile that is targetted to all devices or a subset with the convert option enabled

    https://call4cloud.nl/2022/11/autopilot-let-there-be-conversion/

WHen the device enrolls into Entra and within Intune, the device could be converted... but that doesn't fit what you are mentioning: "gets added to Autopilot automatically even after removed from Autopilot"... If the device is removed from intune/entra and autopilot there is no way the device could get added to the list of autopilot devices because it lost all trust to the service.

Did you performed a wipe and removed the device object in entra etc or just removed the objects and nothing more? As I would wipe the device (remote) and make sure the objects are removed once the device is getting wiped.

@Vinod Survase, Thanks for the reply. In fact, device ownership only has two values: corporate and personal., We can't change it to one user.

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/intune/enrollment/corporate-identifiers-add#change-device-ownership

In Genral, when a device is given to one user, the primary user needs to be set as the user.

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/intune/remote-actions/find-primary-user

When the old user leaves the company, you can do Autopilot reset or wipe on the device. Then the enrolled by and primary user will be empty. When new user sign in, they will be set as the new user. For the device who owns it, you can check it via Intune by the primary user of the device information.
