Hi Everyone,

I'm new beginner in Azure, my customer wish to migration current on-premises infrastructure to Azure in few phases. Current on-premises setup is using VMware for all services, so I have the question.

First phase is planning migrate the one of the DC and fille server to Azure as the VM, but need remain the same IP address, I have seen a lot of articles teaching about the migration but all with different IP, do anyone can advise how can I make this goal?

Regards,

Paul

Hi @Anonymous , I understand that you want to migrate VM from on-prem to Azure but they need to retain the same IP address. I assume you're talking about private IP addresses, please let me know if this is not the case.

I suggest you not to do it. Network topology in Azure is quite different compared to on-premises, and during the migration you'd need Azure virtual network to connect to your on-premises network, which is very challenging if they use the same IP address space.

Please plan and design your network in Azure according to best practices: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/cloud-adoption-framework/migrate/azure-best-practices/migrate-best-practices-networking

    Hi, Paul

It is not recommended to use the same IP address range in Azure, then on-premises to avoid routing and address space issues; your best bet would be to re-ip the Virtual Machine to the new VNET, with new address space - and rely on DNS instead for your application failovers.

Having said that, you can extend your virtual network by using a VXLAN tunnel between 2 Server 2019 virtual servers: Extend your on-premises subnets into Azure using extended network for Azure

Doing so, will rely on the management and upkeep of these virtual machines, but as the note indicates:

It is recommended to have a new address space for Azure, it will reduce a lot of rework later on.
