Issue with renaming my Sharepoint domain

Hello guys,

I had made a terrible mistake when trying to rename my Sharepoint domain oldcompany.onmicrosoft.com to newcompany.onmicrosoft.com but set my new domain newcompany.onmicrosoft.com to initial domain (silly me).

Because of my not-carefully-read-the-instruction, now this domain newcompany.onmicrosoft.com's status won't change from "Available" to "Verified" to proceed to the next step.

Is there any way to revert this?

For example:

  • remove the resources referencing this domain name to make this domain "Verified"?
  • create a new domain newcompany2.onmicrosoft.com and do it over?

Instruction links: (I stuck at step 6 and 7)

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/change-your-sharepoint-domain-name

Thank you.

Hi Tony, Try renaming it via SPO PowerShell. Do take note that it may take hours to days for the process to complete.

    Warning

Changing your SharePoint domain name might take several hours to days depending on the number of sites and OneDrive users that you have. We strongly recommend that you make this change during a period of low usage (like a weekend) and tell users to avoid accessing SharePoint and OneDrive content during the change. In addition, any actions that create new OneDrives and sites (such as creating a new team or private channel in Microsoft Teams) will be temporarily blocked during the rename.

Use Microsoft PowerShell to rename your domain
