SCCM - How can I check if clients are receiving Windows updates?

Hello all,

I'm really hoping someone can help. I have taken over the IT at a school that uses SCCM and am wanting to understand Windows update deployment better. Previously, I have only used WSUS which I installed as a role on a server.

We currently have 3 X virtual servers:

1.) sccm (running system center configuration manager)
2.) orc (running orchestrator)
3.) dp1 (distribution point)

When I started, only 50 machines had Win 10 but over the past few months we have upgraded the whole site of approx 350 computers using SCCM to Win10. We manually ran a Windows Updates from Microsoft after each install but now want to ensure updates are pushed out via SCCM. The problem is, I'm not really sure if this is currently happening or not. if I click 'check for updates' on my laptop which was imaged and is running the SCEP client, it generally finds updates but I can't see the familiar message of 'This is managed by your system Administrator'

If I look at C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log - I can see that updates are being installed to clients but I'm not too sure if these are coming from SCCM or Windows updates. Also, I'm not sure if SCCM is currently automatically downloading and pushing out updates or if it is waiting for someone like me to approve.

Can someone please point me in the direction of where I can check?

If it helps, here is one days worth of logs from ReportingEvents.

    Hi,

    You could run the PowerShell to check the registry hives:

    Get-ItemProperty 'Registry::HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate'

    netstat -abn will also displays the currently network connections status to help us determine where client are getting updates.

    Yesterday, I noticed that the school has a Group Policy Object for pushing updates from SCCM that was no longer linked to any Computer OU's. I have now linked this to a test OU and if I run the same Powershell from the test computer, receive the following:

    Question - do I need to define the update server from Group Policy or can everything be managed centrally from SCCM providing the clients all have SCEP installed?

    This is taken from ReportingEvents from the Test PC. It looks like it's finding some updates but also failing. interestingly, if I search ReportingEvents for 'sccm' I don't find the server? Historically, when I have used a dedicated WSUS server, I could always find the server path in this file.

    Don't define the update server from Group Policy. The ConfigMgr client will set those values via Local Group Policy.

    Thanks for confirming that we don't need to configure anything from Group Policy. So my next question is, where do I start in trying to work out why the clients aren't getting their updates from SCCM? I'm sure the previous IT Manager would have configured this but we have re-imaged all computers. Is it a case of I just need to add the computers we have imaged to a group?

    Also, how can I see when SCCM was last synchronised with Microsoft? If I click on Software Library/Software Updates/All Software Updates, it shows 1000 + items but I can't see anything recent and I don'tsee an option to sort by date.

    Many thanks for your help with this. I could easily setup a WSUS server but would prefer to use SCCM if we can. Unfortunately, I just don't know much about it and am mindful that these clients need updating.
