We are using Sharepoint Server 2016, i.e. on premise on our domain.

Users laptops are currently running windows 10 and office 2016, but we are going to upgrade to Windows 11 and Office 365 ( for office desktop products like Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc)

Is the use of Office 365 desktop components compatible with Sharepoint server 2016 ?

Thanks

    Hi @Greg Booth ,

I think I understand what you mean. You mean that users enter the SharePoint server 2016 site directly through the laptop's browser, right?

Unfortunately, this is not possible. SharePoint server requires three machines to work together. There is no way to work without that environment. It is not like SharePoint online, all servers are in the cloud.

    This is my test situation:

As you can see, the site cannot be opened in win 10.

    Sory again.

    Hi @Greg Booth ,

Are you currently deploying and using SharePoint server 2016 in Windows 10?

As far as I know, the latest version of the system that SharePoint 2016 is currently compatible with is Windows server 2019. For details, see:

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/install/hardware-and-software-requirements#minimum-software-requirements-for-sharepoint-server-2016

And the compatibility of Office 365 desktop components with SharePoint Server 2016 may vary depending on the specific version of Office 365 being used. And, there will be many limitations, such as no autosave and only some basic functions. Because office 365 belongs to Microsoft 365, the corresponding account storage is really different from the storage of SharePoint server.

To sum up, my suggestion is:

If you can use SharePoint server 2016 without restrictions in Windows 10, it is recommended that you do not upgrade.

Or, you can try to switch to use Microsoft 365 products, which include SharePoint in Microsoft 365, office 365, OneDrive, etc.

    Hope this can help.
