Hi, I already have my target framework set to 4.7.2. So I tried to do a Nuget restore : I tried to do a nuget restore and got this error. I am not sure what I should do or try now? thanks for any advice or suggestions

Hello @iqworks Information Quality Works , Sometimes, the project cache may cause this issue(something in one of the cache files maybe still reference to an old version of .NET Framework). Please try to remove bin , obj and the hidden .vs folder manually, and then rebuild your project, do a NuGet restore. What type of project is this? Go to the file system where the project resides, is it a .csproj file? Open the file in a text editor. If it does then find the <TargetFrameworks> element. It should have a value of v4.7.2 . If the file instead looks like this. <Project Sdk="Microsoft.NET.Sdk.Web"> <PropertyGroup> Then you're using a new SDK-format project for .NET framework. This isn't going to work out well so create a new ASP.NET project targeting NET Framework. If this is not a web-project then you can use the SDK format but ensure you have the following element inside a PropertyGroup . <TargetFramework>net472</TargetFramework> I'm assuming here you're actually loading the solution/web project. If you aren't then nothing is going to work.

Thanks Tianyu, unfortunately, deleting those 3 folders did not fix it. It gave over 150 errors?

But, and other suggestions or advice is welcomed

If you also try to remove the bin and obj folders in other project folders and rebuild the whole solution will the error disappear?

If you backup your solution and try to select a previous version of .NET Framework, for example, .NET Framework 4.6.1, will the same error appear?

Besides, which version of Visual Studio are you using? Is there any "special" setting in your solution/project like build event... Will repairing Visual Studio work(VS Installer > More > Repair)?

Hi Tianyu Sun-MSFT , there are only two other projects in that solution, one is a class library, the other is a .net framework website. I unloaded the class library, but the error still appears.

going back to 4.6.1 gave the same error message?

the version is :

I think i mentioned the VS repair did not work either?

No special settings. They are the same settings I have had for years.

I doubt that something in your solution/project, targets to the different version of .NET Framework(instead of v4.7.2).

Except the files in obj and bin folders, are there any references(assemblies) or packages that you used in this project but target to the different version of .NET Framework(instead of v4.7.2)?

Hi Tianyu Sun-MSFT, i doubt it to.

I have a web app project (converted from a .net website) called MBSAnalysisMVCWebApp. I am trying to call an MVC controller method from my main MVC project called Mbsa. The controller method resides in MBSAnalysisMVCWebApp. So, I have a reference to MBSAnalysisMVCWebApp from Mbsa. I removed the reference but am still getting the error in Mbsa.

Yesterday, I removed the reference and still got the message :

Your project does not reference ".NETFramework,Version=4.7.2" framework. Add a reference to ".NETFramework,Version=4.7.2" in the "TargetFrameworks" property of your project file and then re-run NuGet restore. Mbsa

Today I want to restore a backup of Mbsa that did compile and add the same changes, and try to build step by step. I will let you know what i find.

BUT, if you think of anything else please feel free to let me know.

What is the value of TargetFrameworkVersion?

Another thing I find odd is that the message says TargetFrameworks but that property is for SDK-format projects. You don't have that or TargetFramework defined in your project file do you?

Can you confirm what type of project it is? Do you have other projects in the same solution and are they using NuGet? Do they restore properly?

But now, the main difference is that I am referencing a class library project that is a “web application” project (converted from a .net framework website) called MBSAnalysisMVCWebApp.

Do they restore properly? On my solution, I restore nuget from the solution level, not the project level?

I even removed MBSAnalysisMVCWebApp as a reference in Mbsa, still got that same single error.

thanks again for your suggestions, I am going to try looking at this from another angle, if there is one :-)

Insert the TargetFrameworkVersion element with the value I gave and then reload your solution. Then try restoring the NuGet packages again.

No, please look at my previous comment. You need to enter exactly this value in the XML.

<TargetFrameworkVersion>v4.7.2</TargetFrameworkVersion>

If you have a <TargetFramework> or <TargetFrameworks> elements in your project file then remove them. They all do the same thing but the 2 latter are only for SDK-based projects. They will stomp over the <TargetFrameworkVersion> property even if it is set.

Hi Mike, yes, I had v4.7.2 before :

I put it back from net472 to v4.7.2.

I did a search in my .csproj for TargetFramework or TargetFrameworks and found nothing. I even searched my entire project, they were not there?

Can you post your .csproj file contents? You can exclude anything in <ItemGroup> as that is just the files you have. However do include the group containing the references. They will be referencing both framework assemblies and assemblies contained in your packages folder.

Also, create a brand new ASP.NET MVC project targeting .NET 4.7.2 and try to build it. Does it work?
