This morning I was still able to use sql, I was curious and deleted something like SQLEXPRESS16, then I uninstalled all sql and reinstalled it all, and used quite a few cmd commands that I didn't know to uninstall but still nothing. I can't remove them, and now what should I do, they are too difficult for me. Please help me as soon as possible, I have a test coming up on June 11 and I need to practice them.

But why this file would be missing, I don't have a direct answer for.

Was this your first installation attempt? Or did you make multiple attempts with random cleanup in between? In the latter case, this error may be due to this, and you original issue was something else.

This is not the first time, I downloaded it many times more than a year ago but failed, but around March 2024 I was able to download it, then I deleted it. Just because I can't change the name of SQLEXPRESS16 or something. I simply want to reinstall it to change the name. 2. When reinstalling failed, I used ChatGPT to provide cmd commands to delete SQLEXPRESS Servers, but then when I went to Control Panel to delete 64bit SQL or something, I couldn't "remove" it because there was nothing in it.

Hi，DukanhhDo you want to modify the instance name of SQL Server? The instance name of SQL Server cannot be altered after it has been installed. Nevertheless, you can install another instance with a name of your choice through the SQL Server Installation Center. I am not sure what operations you have performed on your SQL Server, but currently, the best approach is to follow my advice, remove all SQL Server installation files and registry entries, and then reinstall SQL Server.

@MikeyQiaoMSFT-0444 I used control panel and deleted all things related to sql server. I also used this command " Get-WmiObject -Class win32_product | Where-Object {$_.Name -like "SQL Server"} " but it doesn't show anything. I was able to delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server" but "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server" was not found. I also downloaded MicrosoftProgram Install and Uninstall to delete and it shows a lot of sql server 2022 and many related things but when I delete it, it doesn't work and gives me an error. For example: error.pdf.

Try this：

Uninstall all SQL Server components you can using Control Panel -> Programs and Features

Backup the registry. In case a rollback is needed.

Open the Registry Editor. There are 2 ways to do that.

3.1    In the search box on the taskbar, type regedit, then select Registry Editor (Desktop app) from the results.

3.2    Right-click Start button, then select Run. Type regedit in the Open: box, and then select OK.

Delete the following keys in regedit. Here you will find how to delete a key.

--HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server

--HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and delete all the sub-keys referencing SQL Server.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services and delete all the keys referencing SQL Server.

Rename all the SQL Server related folders in the computer like C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server and subfolders.

Finally, restart your computer.

.NET Data Provider for SqlServer is part of the .NET framework and does not need to be uninstalled. After understanding the suggested content, have you tried to re-download and install SQL Server?

I've seen posts with similar problems but they all seem to be ineffective. Actually, I'm wasting so much time on this strange problem, which I've spent over a year and still don't know how to fix.

I can add a titbit about the link Mikey shared with you. Myself, I originally learnt about this article when I tried to help someone else who also had installation problems, and the prospects seemed dire. This poster found this article, followed the instructions and - success!

When you repeatedly have been going forth and back like you have done, it may be difficult to get things going. The best solution may be to create a virtual machine and install SQL Server on the VM. If you have never worked with VMs before, there is certainly a hurdle. But VMs are a great asset, so there is a value in its own to get started with them.

Erland is correct, but I'm really curious as to why you can't reinstall SQL Server even after dozens of system reinstalls. I'm not sure from where you've obtained your installation media, but typically, reinstalling the system is the silver bullet for software installation issues. If that doesn't work, it doesn't add up. The use of virtual machines, which Erland mentioned, is a widespread practice. I personally used virtual machines to set up a Linux environment back in school. Overall, virtual machine technology is indeed a good workaround, especially compared to your problematic system environment.

@MikeyQiaoMSFT-0444 I mean from 1 year ago until now I have had to reinstall windows nearly a dozen times and install sql with errors but somehow miraculously in March 2024 I installed sql2019 and it worked successfully.

What we maybe should mention here is that there is a known issue where Windows 11 for some disk drives reports a disk-sector size that SQL Server cannot cope with, and if you have one of these disk drives, setup will fail no matter how many times you flatten your machine and reinstall windows.

Whether this is your root problem, we don't know. In any case, Microsoft has published an article with workarounds for the problem.
