Hello everyone, I am compeltly new to azure and i was thinking about creating a VM on Azure, when i started the process it showed me that the cost will be 0.1170/hr. So i am wondering if that means that i wont be charged when i'm not connected to the VM or when the VM is not getting traffic (say no http request to the app hosted on the VM). I know this might sound dumb to some experienced users but again i am new here. with very limited budget :(

that's per hour the VM is running. when not in use, you can shutdown the VM (it will not be usable until restarted). when shutdown you will still incur storage costs. when running and connected you may incur additional bandwidth costs.

    Hi,

You will be charged when the VM is running. Whether or not you are connected or VM is not getting traffic, you will still be charged 0.1170/hr.

To avoid compute charges the VM needs to be Deallocated. Please note that there are other charges associated with a VM that will still accrue, even when the VM id deallocated. For example, the managed disk(s) and public IP address.

    Hello Mohamed lemine Maouloud,

    Thanks for your question.

VMs are charged based on the time they are running, not based on the traffic or usage. What do I mean by this: Basically, you will be charged when the machine is running whether it is being used or not. To save costs, when you are not using the machine you may choose to shut it down. You can also choose to set Autoshutdown Times.

To shutdown a VM, simply go to the resource and click stop. This will power down the VM. Example in the screenshot below.

Also do note that there some other costs which come into play, some even when the VM is stopped which include: Disks: Azure managed disk types; Egress costs; IP addresses etc.

To get an estimated outlook for what your costs will be like you can use the the pricing calculator. See https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/calculator/

    Regards,

    Abiola
