How to create a child DNS zones in Azure DNS

we have a domain for example main.test.edu. Also we have a child domain ******@main.test.edu. And all child domain records are currently in main.test.edu. Now we have a requirement to create ******@child.main.test.edu DNS record. Since all child.main.test.edu records are at root level this DNS entry is not able to create.

To create ******@child.main.test.edu, we need to create a child DNS zone child.main.test.edu

How we can create? Is it the right way?

I am afraid your naming conventions are misleading.

When you say "we have a domain for example main.test.edu. Also we have a child domain ******@main.test.edu"

Don't you mean you have records such as "www1.child**.main.test.edu" and "www2.child.**main.test.edu" ? (. and not @ )

The correct way to create a childzone in Azure is by following : Create a child DNS zone

Once done, you should be able to create new records such as "webex" within the newly created child zone "child.main.test.edu"
So, the effective record becomes "webex.child.main.test.edu"

If my understanding is incorrect, please do let me know and please elaborate your query so we can assist you better.

Thanks for your answer. Yes it should be dot (.) not @.

My question is currently child.main.test.edu records are in main.test.edu. Now I want to create a DNS sub Zone under main.test.edu as child.main.test.edu. And copy all the child related DNS entries to be copy from manin.test.edu to child.main.test.edu.

You can use the Import and export a DNS zone file feature

First export the DNS Zone "main.test.edu"

This will contain all the records including the ones that should be represented by "child.main.test.edu" also

Then, continue to create a new Child Zone from Portal

Under DNS Zone editor, import the DNS Zone

Edit the records to

Remove the NS records

Remove the records that are not supposed to be part of the "child.main.test.edu" zone

From the records which are supposed to be part of the "child.main.test.edu" zone, remove the second prefix "child"

i.e., www.child -----------> www

This way, the new Zone created will have all the records expected from "child.main.test.edu"
