We are experiencing the a similar issue as described here ( https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/1858506/cannot-sync-outlook-365-to-sharepoint-server-2016 ) and receive a similar error.

A workaround is described here, but it does not work: https://learn.microsoft.com/sr-latn-rs/sharepoint/troubleshoot/lists-and-libraries/sync-sharepoint-list-error-0x80070005

We have the following subscription:- Microsoft 365 E5

Sync between the Sharepoint Contact List and the Outlook 365 Contact Folder is lost after a few weeks and cannot be re-established.

I do the following to re-sync to Outlook so that I can again edit the Sharepoint Contact List directly from Outlook 365.

  • Delete synced Contact folder in Outlook 365
  • Remove the Sharepoint list from Account Settings / Data Files
  • Remove the list file from C:\Users\XXX\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook
  • Wait for a few days
  • Sync the Sharepoint Contact List again via Sharepoint list feature "Connect to Outlook"

As the sync is lost after a few weeks, I have to re-do this again and again. Any chance to keep the sync continuously set?

To change from Sharepoint Classic Experience to to New Experience does not help at all, as the the New Experience does not have anymore Contact List, nor does it allow to sync with Outlook 365.

Outlook | Windows | Classic Outlook for Windows | For business
Microsoft 365 and Office | SharePoint | For business | Windows

Go to the Outlook -> File tab -> Office Account -> Under User Information, find Connected Services.

Please check whether the site which contains the contact you want to connect is listed under Connected Services. If not, please add it.

It's not a calendar, it's a Contact List. The Sharepoint "Sites" is listed under "Connected Services". The problem remains.

Please follow below tips to troubleshoot the issue.

1.In the Outlook -> File tab -> Make sure in both Info and Office Account, you have logged in with the account has at least write permission for the SharePoint contact list.

2.In the Outlook contact page, click Type Exchange Password&Connect, re-enter the Microsoft account credential.

3.Account Settings -> SharePoint Lists -> Double click the contact list -> Untick "Display this list on other computers with the account" and Update Limit. And make sure has write permission.

    Hi Emily

Unfortunately all these steps do not help me. I'm the owner of the Sharepoint site and I have site collection admin rights. I have full access rights and as explanined, the sync works brilliant for some time without any issue. I can write into the Sharepoint Contact List directly from the synced Contact folder in Outlook 365. But after a certain time, the synced connection is breaking down with the error message described here: https://learn.microsoft.com/sr-latn-rs/sharepoint/troubleshoot/lists-and-libraries/sync-sharepoint-list-error-0x80070005

I then have to wait for some time and can set it up again.

There must be a routine running in the background which resets the credentials and/or syncing between Sharepoint Online and Outlook 365 after a certain period of time. You would need to investigate in that direction.

    Thanks.

    Best regards,

    Patrick

Yes, it may be caused by the credential reset between Outlook and SharePoint.

I have checked it with Outlook support engineer, there is no related settings in the Outlook.

I suggest you open a service request with Micrsoft to check your logs remotely to solve this issue.
