Multiple Device Enrolments for single device with migration.

I've had a device that is enrolled in Intune and Entra as me as the owner and manager. I then created a user with admin rights and then I used USMT to copy files from that user’s old computer to this new device, with the USMT set to not migrating windows components only apps and files. Then upon re-accessing this device under any user on the device it tries to re-enrol that device only to create duplicate for each user alongside the original enrolment, with and “something went wrong” and asks for it to sign in again with constant loop of “something went wrong. The enrolments then state that the devices are not compliant when the original was. Removing the duplicate enrolments leads to devise being lock out with re-enrolment only available through re-install.  I’m having to repeatedly reinstall Windows to gain access to the device. I have setup numerous other devices prior, but this device is causing this repetitive issue.

    Hi Brad Madden,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Q&A. I am Saiteja from Q&A will be assisting you with your query. Based on the information provided, here is my understanding: When a user tries to sign in it states, "Something went wrong" and asks for sign in which creates an entry which is leading for multiple duplicate accounts. As per the error, I see this issue comes whenever there is no proper registration has not happened with the device or if there are any policies which might not be satisfying from Intune.

I would like to segregate the issue before going for any solution. Could you please check the user work or school account status and check if it is properly configured as your requirement (Azure AD join or Azure AD registered).

If there is any error stating sign in, kindly re register the device. If you would like to go with Azure Ad register or join, kindly following this document. Here you need to choose to add existing device to Azure.

    1. Open Settings, and then select Accounts.
    2. Select Access work or school, and then select Connect.
    3. Here on "Set up work or school account" if you provide credentials, this is going to be an Azure AD register device.
    4. If you would like to set up the device as Azure AD join, you need to choose "Join the device to Azure Active directory".
    5. Once you are finished, restart the device and check the scenario.

If this does not help you or if you are not working with device registration with Azure and the device has issues with Intune itself, here is the document that helps you in solving the issue from Intune. The document I shared is to check the required troubleshooting steps from Intune for the same error which covers the Intune policies and certificate to be checked to resolve the issue.

I hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.

Issue re-created and ascertained due to Intune Enrolment device limit restriction. Enrolment device limit exceeded for administration user yet still assign as owner. Intune attempts multiple times to enroll device under any additional users added, and administration user as second personal device as opposed to company device already originally enrolled. Windows won't accept original enrollment as device limit is exceeded and won't accept reconnect to work account as computer already is connected... hence "Something went wrong" account reconnect denial. Error fixed with increase of Intune Enrolment device limit restriction, removal of all device registration, reinstalled and enrolled.
