How can I fix "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 during a paging operation."

I have run chkdsk multiple times, with all of the various scan/fix options. Still getting this error.

Have run hardware diagnostics with Dell. There are no identifiable hardware issues.

I would like to solve this issue before the system fails due to it.

    Hello

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community forum.

The error “An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 during a paging operation” is usually logged when an I/O operation to a hard disk is unsuccessful. This can be due to a variety of reasons, including running out of disk space, a problematic hard disk controller, a damaged HDD data cable, or improper ejection of the disk.

Since you’ve already run chkdsk and hardware diagnostics with no success, here are some additional steps you can try:

    1. Check the hard disk’s cable: If you have a desktop computer, connect the hard disk to another port (e.g. SATA Port) on your motherboard or replace the hard disk’s cable. If you have a laptop computer, disconnect the hard disk from its cable and connect it again or replace its cable.
    2. Check for disk space: Make sure that the disk is not full.
    3. Check for external USB disk issues: If you receive the error Event ID 51 at an external USB disk, then probably the error is caused because the disk was removed from the system without using the “Safe USB removal” option. At this case, connect the disk to another USB port, or – if you can – remove the drive from its enclosure and attach it directly to your system.
    4. Reinstall Windows: If none of the above solutions work, you might need to reinstall Windows.

Please remember to back up your data before performing these steps.

This is a mirrored pair of Hynix SSDs in a Dell R440 chassis. I've moved the pair to a different pair of bays with the same result. There is 300GB free in the pair.

I've installed the latest versions of the controller drivers, controller firmware and drive firmware. There are no cables to replace, there is no USB involved.

I may be in the wrong group. It's not like Microsoft makes these communities easy to navigate.

Since you've already taken several steps to diagnose and address the problem, here are additional troubleshooting steps to consider:

    Replace SATA Cables:

Even though you mentioned no cables to replace, it's worth double-checking the SATA cables and connections. Sometimes, a faulty or loose cable can cause intermittent issues. Consider replacing the cables with known good ones to rule out cable-related problems.

    Test with Different Drives:

If possible, test your system with a different set of drives (not in a mirrored pair) to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is specific to the SSDs.

    Check for Background Disk Activity:

Investigate whether there are any background or scheduled tasks that might be placing a heavy load on the disks during paging operations. You can use performance monitoring tools to check for high disk activity during these times.

    Monitor System Temperature:

Excessive heat can sometimes cause issues with SSDs. Ensure that the server's cooling system is functioning correctly and that the SSDs are not overheating.

    Check Paging File Configuration:

Review your system's paging file (virtual memory) configuration. Ensure that it's properly configured and has sufficient space allocated. You can adjust paging file settings in the Windows Control Panel under System > Advanced system settings > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Change.

    Review Application Behavior:

Consider whether any specific applications running on the server might be causing high disk activity during paging operations. Check if there are any application-specific logs or errors.

    Monitor Disk Health:

Continuously monitor the health of your SSDs using tools like SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) diagnostic utilities. These utilities can provide insights into the overall health and potential issues with the drives.

    Contact Dell Support:

If the issue persists, consider reaching out to Dell Support again, providing them with detailed information about your troubleshooting steps and the error message. They might have additional diagnostics or solutions specific to your hardware configuration.

Given that you've already conducted extensive troubleshooting, it's possible that the issue is related to a specific hardware or software configuration unique to your environment. Working with the manufacturer's support team or a professional technician may be necessary to identify and resolve the root cause of this error.

Cables are not replaceable. This is a rack mounted server with physical bays. I have moved the drives to a new bay.

Drives have passed all hardware tests. Next step is to replace the mirrored pair with a single drive.

Little to no background disk activity.

Dell hardware support has gone through hardware diagnostics with us multiple times. There are no hardware errors found. Dell is the one that sent me to Microsoft. I have submitted a paid support ticket 48 hours ago and have not received any response.

I am a professional technician. This is beyond my ability to fix. I'm the one people call when they have issues like this.
