Cannot add more text to my Microsoft List column even though it is set as "multiple lines" and has not reached the stated character limit

Miscrosoft Lists, through sharepoint. I have many lists and this is the first time this issue has occurred. And so far I have only noticed it on one of the lists.

I try to write additional information, it will not allow more characters. But if I delete written characters, then I can replace them. It is acting like I have reached a character limit, but I know I have come nowhere near the listed limit. I have tried working with the list and column settings, but everything looks fine. And this is not affecting other lists. I have tried refreshing, closing out and reopening, still the problem persists.

    Hi @Sollberger, Camber ,

In Microsoft Lists, the character limit for multiline text fields is 63,999 characters by default.

It seems this is not a common issue per my test. However, we can work together to narrow down and resolve the situation. So, Please kindly provide more information below to let us work further.

1.Does this problem occur when creating a new multi-line text column in this problematic list?

2.Consider whether the "Append Changes to Existing Text" option is enabled, as this can sometimes lead to unexpected behavior when updating the column.

3.Go to List Settings > Columns > Select the problematic column and ensure the "Number of lines for editing" is set to a higher value if it's a multi-line text column.

    User's image

4.Check if there are any column validation rules that limit the number of characters. Go to List Settings > Column Settings > Validation Settings to see if there are any rules.

5.Browser Cache: Sometimes, browser cache can cause unexpected behavior. Try clearing your browser cache or using a different browser to see if the issue persists.

6.Try creating a new list with similar settings and see if the issue occurs there as well.

Summary: There may be corruption in a particular list, which can happen. If, after checking all the possibilities above, it is confirmed that the problem only occurs in this particular list, then we can only try to discard the corrupted list, which we regret.

Hope the information can help you. And if there have any unclear or misunderstanding, please feel free to post back and we’ll continue to help you all the time!

    Hi @Sollberger, Camber ,

Based on everyone's feedback it looks like this seems to be an update issue, I'm sure this will be fixed, will have to wait some time. If this business is very urgent for you guys, the current effective measure is to contact the admin of your organization and request a free support ticket in Microsoft Admin Center.

The Microsoft escalation engineers there can have a remote session with you and collect logs from the backend to figure out the root cause of the problem.

    For reference:

Feel free to update here if there are any updates on this issue. This can assist other community members in resolving similar issues.

Thanks everyone! Seems like a lot of us are facing this issue. While Microsoft works to fix it, might I recommend clicking "I have this problem too" and/or reporting a problem on the actual list. The more people they see are affected by this, they faster they are likely to be working on this.

Unfortunately still a problem for me and causing a lot of issues with my customers as I am sure it is with you all as well. Thanks so much!
