Request failed with status code 500 in Microsoft Purview

Trying to apply a legal hold policy to a case in the new Microsoft Purview portal and receive the following error:

User's image

Something went wrong... Request failed with status code 500.

This error is completely unhelpful. I've wrestled this issue before using the legacy portal which gave more specific errors and I think it was due to either a case, search, or hold policy having a duplicate name that Purview wanted to be unique, but that doesn't seem to be the problem this time. If the app is going to break, at least give us descriptive error that we can actually troubleshoot. So frustrating and such a waste of time.

    @Chad Pearson

    Thankyou for posting your query on Microsoft Q&A platform

    Glad that you figured out the way to resolve your issue and thank you for posting your solution so that others experiencing the same thing can easily reference this! Since the Microsoft Q&A community has a policy that "The question author cannot accept their own answer. They can only accept answers by others ", I'll repost your solution in case you'd like to "Accept " the answer.

    The classic experience was reverted back ,which revealed that the Policy Name had too many characters and exceeded the 50-character limit. Once it was consolidated, the hold was applied successfully and it resolved the issue.

    Reposting this as an answer to ensure it benefits the wider community. Kindly accept the answer by clicking on Accept answer button so that the solution reaches the community in case anyone is facing similar issue. Thankyou.

    Thank you for the update. I reverted back to the classic experience which showed me that my Policy Name had too many characters and exceeded the 50 character limit. Once I consolidated it, the hold applied successfully.
