Rename SQL Database in Azure

Hello,

I created a free Azure subscription, with a free SQL Database. The name was imposed MyFreeDB.
Then I took a S0 10 DTU subscription as an an upgrade of the SQL Database, on a free PAYASYOUGO subscription.

I tried to rename the SQL Database in SQL Server Management Studio, but then the database resource was no more available on Azure website, so I reverted to MyFreeDB. How can I rename this resource that is on the S0 plan without creating another one and take a new S0 plan?

Rename an Azure SQL Database database

Use the following steps to rename an Azure SQL database using T-SQL in SQL Server Management Studio.

Connect to the master database for your instance.

Open a query window.

Make sure that no one is using the database.

Copy and paste the following example into the query window and select Execute. This example changes the name of the MyTestDatabase database to MyTestDatabaseCopy.

ALTER DATABASE MyTestDatabase MODIFY NAME = MyTestDatabaseCopy;

Here are the steps to rename your database without creating a new one:

1.Ensure No Active Connections: Make sure there are no active connections to the database. You can use the Activity Monitor in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) to check and close any open connections.

2.Rename Using SSMS:

Open SSMS and connect to your Azure SQL Database.

In Object Explorer, expand the Databases node.

Right-click on your database (MyFreeDB) and select Rename.

Enter the new name and press Enter.

3.Refresh Azure Portal: After renaming, refresh the Azure portal to ensure the changes are reflected. Sometimes, it might take a few moments for the changes to propagate.

4.Check Database Properties: Verify the database properties in the Azure portal to ensure the database is still on the S0 plan.

Hi,

Unfortunately, renaming resources in Azure is not allowed. The name is part of the resource ID of the resource which is unique across all resources in all tenants. Only option is to re-create the database. If you have data you will need to restore from backup the data.
