Hi,

My Microsoft account is still linked to a work organization through Azure that my old company had made.

When trying to access Azure to remove my email from the organization, I get the following:

"Sign-in failed

Error code: AADSTS5000225

Error message: AADSTS5000225: This tenant has been blocked due to inactivity. To learn more about tenant lifecycle policies, see https://aka.ms/TenantLifecycle Trace ID: c1dc0628-a259-4809-9bc9-08255de60600 Correlation ID: a5126c1b-39f8-46c4-b248-f3531e74dd60 Timestamp: 2025-05-22 10:34:54Z"

Telephone support does not have live agents to help me out, and has redirected me to the Support page. So now I am here.

How can I remove myself from the organization now that the tenant is blocked? I really need to do this as I'm trying to delete my Microsoft account altogether.

With regards

    Hello @Romain Coquette

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Q&A.

The error message you encountered indicates that your tenant has been inactive for over 200 days past the billing cycle, triggering Microsoft’s effort to remove inactive tenants. When a tenant remains inactive for this period, the OMS commerce system imposes a login block (AADSTS5000225). Twenty days after the login block is applied, the tenant is permanently deleted.

    Tenant inaccessible due to inactivity

If you plan to unblock your inactive tenant, it’s essential that it has been blocked for less than 20 days. After the 20-day period, the tenant is permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.

If it has been less than 20 days since the block, please provide the following details for further assistance:

    • Tenant ID
    • Error Code
    • Correlation ID from the recent failure
    • Timestamp from the recent failure
    • Business impact and justification for restoring the tenant, and an explanation of the impact if the tenant cannot be restored

Note: If it's a test tenant, please re-create a new tenant for testing purposes.

Quickstart: Create a new tenant in Microsoft Entra ID

Let us know if you have any additional queries. Happy to assist you further.

    Hello Romain Coquette,

Thanks for sharing the full context—this is a frustrating situation. Here's a clear breakdown of what’s happening and what you can do:

    I. Why you are seeing this error:

The error AADSTS5000225 means that the Azure Active Directory tenant that your old company created has been inactive for over 200 days and is now blocked. You can no long er access it, and no admin actions can be performed, including removing users, because:

    • You cannot access the directory
    • No admin exists
    • Microsoft does not allow self-removal from inactive tenant

    II. What you can do:

    1. Remove the Directory Association from your Microsoft Account

Note: If the tenant is blocked, this option may not work.

    1. Contact Microsoft Support:

Explain that you're unable to close your account due to a blocked Azure tenant. Include the error code (AADSTS5000225)
