Thank you for contacting Microsoft Q&A Forum.
I understand that it can be disappointing when high-quality legacy hardware like the EliteBook 1040 G3 no longer qualifies for the latest OS upgrade — this is one of the challenges of evolving security and performance standards in modern computing. Following a review of Microsoft’s official Windows 11 hardware requirements, I would like to confirm that the HP EliteBook 1040 G3 is not eligible for a supported upgrade or installation of Windows 11 via Microsoft-supported channels by some reason:
- Unsupported Processor (CPU)
The HP EliteBook 1040 G3 is equipped with Intel 6th Generation (Skylake) processors such as the Intel Core i5-6300U or i7-6600U.
Per Microsoft’s official list of supported processors, Windows 11 only includes support for 8th Generation Intel CPUs (Coffee Lake) and newer.

As this device’s CPU is not on the supported list, Windows 11 installation via official upgrade paths (e.g., Windows Update) will be blocked, and the hardware will be flagged as non-compliant.
- TPM 2.0 May Be Missing or Disabled
Windows 11 requires hardware-based security features, including Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0.
Some HP EliteBook 1040 G3 machines may only offer TPM version 1.2, and even if you upgrade to TPM version 2.0, you will still not be able to use Windows 11

Microsoft mandates TPM 2.0 for secure boot, device encryption, and other modern security features.

If TPM 2.0 is not available or cannot be enabled, the system will not meet the secured-core requirements expected by Windows 11.
- Lack of Official Windows 11 Drivers from the Manufacturer
HP has not published Windows 11-compatible drivers for the EliteBook 1040 G3.
Only Windows 10 driver packages are currently available on HP’s official support page for this device. Without confirmed compatibility, key features such as:
- Chipset-level integration
- Touchpad and gesture support
- Biometric authentication (fingerprint)
- Docking station functionality
- Firmware-based security layers
If these do not operate correctly, it could lead to instability and degraded performance.
Devices running unsupported drivers may also fail to pass future Windows compliance and performance checks.
I recommend continuing to use Windows 10, which will remain fully supported with security updates and technical assistance until October 14, 2025, or consider transitioning to modern hardware that meets all prerequisite requirements for Windows 11.
