UPDATE: fixed with a hard reset of computer, not sure original issue

Hello, I am having an issue with sharepoint. When I try and look ay excel sheets on my Sharepoint on my google chrome browser, it is displaying the test with weird symbols:

User's image

The original text is still there when I view it in the formula box, and the text is formatted as Arial, so I am not sure what is up. When I pull up the same sheet in microsoft edge it displays as it is supposed to.

    Hi Karlie Del Santo,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Forum!

Thanks again for sharing the issue with Excel files showing strange symbols when viewed in SharePoint using Google Chrome. I’ve looked into this further, and based on my research, there doesn’t appear to be a specific or confirmed root cause for this behavior at the moment.

Therefore, if possible, I recommend you: Use Microsoft Edge for best compatibility

Microsoft Edge is deeply integrated with Microsoft 365 services and SharePoint, and it handles embedded fonts and formatting more reliably. We strongly recommend using Edge to open and edit Excel files on SharePoint while the Chrome issue is being investigated.

Please note that our team has limited ability to provide deep technical support for Chrome-specific issues, as our tools and environment are primarily optimized for Microsoft Edge and Microsoft 365 services.

That said, here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue in Chrome:

Try changing the font in the file: If possible, switch from Arial to another font like Calibri or Times New Roman.. Then reload the file in Chrome and see if the symbols still look strange.

Open the Excel file in Chrome’s Incognito mode: Please try opening an incognito browser and accessing the file in that sharepoint again to see if you encounter the same font error.

Note: We've tested this scenario in a virtual environment using Chrome Version 137.0.7151.120 (Official Build) and found that Excel files opened without font issues. However, we are not entirely certain about this issue since we don't have your original file data and since it may contain complex function data. Therefore, make sure that both your Chrome and Excel browsers are updated to the latest compatible versions to minimize rendering errors and we still recommend using Microsoft Edge for the most optimal experience.
