VirtualBox - Failed to get device handle and/or partition ID

Hello,

I wanted to install Windows XP in VirtualBox. I followed these instructions. I installed the program, created a virtual machine, but when running and selecting this installer, it crashes with an error.

Deleting and creating a Virtual machine or uninstalling and installing VirtualBox didn't help.

I was looking into the BIOS and I have Virtualization Technology (VT-x) enabled.

How do I fix it, please?

Thank you

    Hello Michal,

This might be an issue you have to take up with Oracle as it just may not be setup for running on the new code changes in Dev channel. They might have a fix. Understand they are quick to respond as well.

Have you tried running VMware Player. I use the Pro version but have not tried it on these builds. I run Dev builds in vm. Suppose I should start testing VMware in one of my test laptops that is on Dev channel.

If you cannot get this working through them, suggest filing a FBH report and share the link back in this forum so Eddie (MSFT) can possibly take a look at this.

    Regards,

Is this on a Windows Insider build?

Again. Sorry. Mainly that I created a print screen and didn't put it here.

    And since I have Windows 10 Home, I can't use Hyper-V.

    Hello Johnny_55,

As I learned from a friend, VirtualBox works on his pc and also has Insider. So it's likely (I actually thought so from the beginning) that there is a problem with Windows and only recovery will solve it. I can't guarantee it's a solution, but the probability is high. However, I don't have time to recover now. I'll have to use another program, but it's already a discussion about something else.

    Thank you anyway.

    Hi Michal,

I did try out VirtualBox in one of my vm's. Started to setup an OS and ended up with a similar screen as you posted, although it was an empty vm. This program works quite differently from VMware. I could not easily see how to get the OS to actually install in VirtualBox. Perhaps running it in a vm itself could have been an issue (set this vm at 8GB ram, 2 cores).

Have you tried running the Dism commands in an elevated command prompt for any window related issues:

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    sfc /scannow

    Regards,
