Mouse doesn't work in Microsoft Word to select text, or highlight text to copy or add features such as bold/italics/underline.

Question

After pasting an E-mail into a Microsoft Word document (which I do all the time), my mouse stopped working to click anywhere in the document and it won't allow me to use the side scroll bar.  I can still click on tabs and commands up top and the page up and down buttons, but I can't highlight text to underline/bold/italics or to copy or move around in the document.  I use these features all the time and am very frustrated.  I can still do all of these things in other applications such as E-mail, Facebook, Internet but not in Word.  Please help.  I have already checked my mouse settings and drivers and they are all up-to-date without errors.  I have restarted my computer; the only next step I can think of is reinstalling Microsoft Office Professional 2007.  I appreciate any assistance you can provide.  Respectfully, Julie

Though not knowing why, I found out a way to solve this problem. The only obstacle for me is to select text in Word using my left mouse key.

Go to another program like a text editor, press ctrl + V to paste something, then go back to the Word, then you can select text again. If you select some text in word and press a letter key, you will not be able to select the text in the Word again, then please repeat what you did, namely go to a text editor or some other program, press ctrl+V, then you are good again. In adobe acrobat, the left mouse key selection issue is the same as Word, you can do this ctrl+V, likewise.

Since Adobe and Office have the same issue, I suspect that this issue arises from the Windows system. Hopefully, microsoft can solve this, though I don't think MicroSoft Corporation will care.

By the way, I am using synergy, which might cause this problem according to some posts. But I don't know if this is true.

I had the same problem, not being able to select text with the left mouse key. In my case, the problem was Synergy.

I stopped the service: (1. Win+R; 2. Msconfig; 3. Tab "Services"; 4. Disable "Synergy") and solved the problem.

The problem is in windows not in word.

download the drive for the mouse from the manufacture and reinstall it.

i did that and it worked form me.
