ok, so i tried to check on the problems i have in my Local Disk (C:) drive, but i am encountering 2 MAJOR problems.

  1. it refuses to auto-fix anything as it is in use. problem is, since it's the local disk on my computer, it is FOREVER in use.
  2. the small scanning window keeps closing before the green bar finishes filling up the empty bar. (it closes when it reaches about 200000 items...i'm not too sure if that's the no. of items i have in my (C:) drive...but the green bar never fills up)

if this happens how can i auto-fix anyhing?? and is something there something wrong with my computer if this is happening??

ok my dumb check disk isn't running. (at startup, it says "disk check is scheduled to run at start up. click any button to cancel it within _ seconds" i don't hit any button, but then it says "disk check is cancelled")...help x.x

and i'm having difficulty understanding this guide [ http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/130824-chkdsk-will-not-run-startup-vista.html ]

(eg. the steps REALLY confuse me. like  the first step is to " Schedule check disk to run using **chkdsk /f** (STEP FIVE below) in the command promt." but i don't know what STEP FIVE they are referring to)

so uhm, can i get you to put step 1 and step 2 in simple words? x.x sorry

    EDIT:

i think the disk check on my computer is spoilt...cause i can run check disk on my external HD on my mum's computer, but not on mine. so...yea i guess this qualifies as one of those "strange things" in my "disappearing virus??" question... sigh... D:

should i just reinstall it? (as described in "STEP FOUR: Replace autochk.exe File"?)

and is "autochk.exe" the file that makes checkdisk work?

will checkdisk in safe mode be better?

(i think there's something seriously wrong with my computer...when i ask it to run in safe mode it stops at one of the loading points and it sometimes won't shut down properly, unless i force shut it down..)

...and i don't have the recovery console...and if i ask my mum, i'm dead (firstly, i'm not supposed to touch my computer. secondly, she wouldn't know what it is). if i ask my dad, i'm dead too. no point asking my sisters, they're overseas. i can't ask my friends, cause they're all avoiding using windows vista as if it was deadly.

and btw from what i mentioned, do you think there's something wrong with my checkdisk?

    Hi,

That is checkdisk (or chkdsk in command line form)

How to Run Check Disk at Startup in Vista

    ===========================

    For more intense error checking

From the Command Prompt of the Recovery Console (if you have one) or from a Vista disk - if you do not

have a Vista disk you can borrow a friend's (it needs to be same 32 or 64 bit and they are not copy protected)

or make one. Also your System maker will sell the physical disks cheap since you already own Windows.

    chkdsk /f /r

    REBOOT

Space after k and before /  and after f and before /

    sfc /scannow

    REBOOT

Space after c and before /

This tells you how to access the System Recovery Options and/or from a Vista DVD

..i think i am referring to chkdsk?? ._. not too sure... it's the one where you right-click > properties > tools > error-checking

if i run it on my next reboot, would it still work?? it didn't scan or autofix cause it said that my disk was in use...and will anything change if i reboot??

do you know why the green bar won't finish loading?

and uhh i don't know the site of the drive makers ._.

Assuming you refer to chqdsk, you should see an option to schedule chkdsk to run on next reboot

If you suspect a drive problem you could also use the free utility on the drive makers site to download / create the free bootable floppy or cd dick

    eg WD uses Seatools
