ok, so i tried to check on the problems i have in my Local Disk (C:) drive, but i am encountering 2 MAJOR problems.

  1. it refuses to auto-fix anything as it is in use. problem is, since it's the local disk on my computer, it is FOREVER in use.
  2. the small scanning window keeps closing before the green bar finishes filling up the empty bar. (it closes when it reaches about 200000 items...i'm not too sure if that's the no. of items i have in my (C:) drive...but the green bar never fills up)

if this happens how can i auto-fix anyhing?? and is something there something wrong with my computer if this is happening??

Go through the methods listed in the reply above carefully so you can run checkdisk and/or

    run the other diagnostics.

Well if you checkdisked the external on you mother's computer that drive might be ok. Can you run

    checkdisk on your local drive?

When you start CheckDisk in Windows it runs during the next boot for the drive that Windows is

installed on. There is a setting that is incorrect on you computer which prevents checkdisk from

running. Use that guide to set the settings correctly 1 step at a time as I think your confusion is

in trying to pick and choose rather than just following it.

How to Fix Chkdsk will Not Run at Startup in Vista

    http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/130824-chkdsk-will-not-run-startup-vista.html

Step 5 in that is just running checkdisk as you have been doing.

The guide tells you how to use set Safe Boot so checkdisk might run.
