I also have this problem with the same error code and have tried the system readiness tool (no change) as well as the A.bat file and ran that (no change).  I am still getting Windows Defender updates through Windows Update, but there is no install history other than the system readiness tool I dowloaded.  My update stopped working a couple of months ago.

I am on Windows Vista Home Premium 2(4)GB Ram Dual Core and update has worked previously but this has happened twice now and the first time I had to reinstall windows which then emptied my hard drive of all of my files and programmes as normal - I don't want to do this again as it tkaes a long time to return the PC to normal.

Is there any more ideas other than the system readiness tool option and the A.bat fix menioned above?

    Thanks a lot

    Hello Eemark,

    Thank you for posting

Please follow this link to download the System Update Readiness Tool

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2889489c-ee87-4607-8aa5-812e8078ab27&DisplayLang=en

After you download the System Update Readiness Tool, it runs a onetime scan for inconsistencies that might prevent future servicing operations. This scan typically takes less than 15 minutes to run. However, the tool might take significantly longer on some computers. The Windows Update progress bar is not updated during the scan, and progress seems to stop at 60% complete for some time. This behavior is expected. The scan is still running and you should not cancel the update.

We look forward to hearing back from you on your results.
