Purchased new PC (Windows 7), everything worked OK until unistalled the supplied McAfee trial software. Now problem is that both DVD drives not recognised, the following is displayed:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Tried updating drivers but states that it is already installed. Also the trouble shooting section does not help.

Any ideas of how to resolve?

Problem fixed!

Problem caused by Norton Internet Security 2010 - I had used Norton to uninstall McAfee.

Tried Norton tech support and they couldn't help at all, they suggested that I go to the vendor of the PC and that problem not caused by NIS 2010.

However, contacted tech support at PC World (the vendor) and they were excellent and identified the problem instantly and guided me through the corrective steps - took about two minutes. Apparently it is a common known fault with Norton - requires register editor fix.

From memory, I believe that the following are the steps to resolve the fault:

Type regedit in search box.

Computer

HKEY-LOCAL-MACHINE

SYSTEM

Current Control Set

Class

Then in RHS box two files had to be deleted: lower and upper (can't remember exact names of the files).

Upon reboot problem fixed!

Thank you JW Stuart for taking the time to suggest possible solutions.

    Just found it - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

the right click on lower registry and upper regsitry and delete.

I am having an issue installing a Samsung SE-S084D on my Gateway Netbook.  I get the Error Code 39.  I have found the registry entry above but within {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} there are 0000, 0001, 0002 and Properties.  Can you advise EXACTLY what files to delete?  Within the main file there is 'LowerFilters' and 'UpperFilters' - is this what needs to be deleted?

    Thanks

I've got the same issue and suspect Norton is the culprit.  I went through the answer listed below, but I'm missing Class under Current Control Set - puttered around looking to see if it might be somewhere else, but I am not able to locate it.  I'm running Windows 7 - don't know if that makes a difference. I think the upper and lower that are referred to here are the upper and lower registry filters.

Under Current Control Set, I have Control, Enum, Hardware Profiles, Policies, services.  Only the first two have any files or commands in them besides default.

    Any tips on this?

Try re-installing McAfee trial software and see if you have regained access to the CD/DVD drives.
