I get an error message with an error code- This device cannot start. (Code 10)".

Last year I bought a Compaq Presario CQ56 Notebook PC-brand new. At first everything worked great on it and then at the end of the year I discovered that anything I plugged into my imports wasn't recognized. I thought maybe it was the devices I was plugging in (digital camera and MP3 player) but a friend of mine told me that it could be that my imports have gone bad. I didn't know that was a possibility but he said I could have a virus on my computer that's not being picked up by my virus scanner and it's caused the imports to crash.

Is that really what's happened? Is there a way for me to find out for sure?

Please help!!!

**I should also mention that I tried plugging in my MP3 player tonight and when it didn't show up in my notification area, I clicked on Devices and Printers in the Start Menu, found my device but it said it needed to be troubleshooted (which I did) and troubleshooter didn't help because it said the drivers are all up to date. Another error message that appears with the MP3 player is "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"

    Hi ,

Thank you for keeping us posted.

Do let us know the status of the issue after performing the troubleshooting steps.

A user account might get corrupt, due to a number of reasons. It can be due to virus and third party applications.

    Thanks.

Thank you for replying to my message! I haven't ignored your advice. I'm just waiting to try my mp3 player on my brother's computer. He has the same computer I do. I will let you know as soon as I do use his and tell you what happened?

How would I know if my user profile is corrupt?

If it is corrupted, would it affect my imports too?

    Hi jenni_leigh,

Thank you for keeping us posted. The steps performed by you are absolutely right.

    Method-

Try a different user account. Check if the issue persists over there.

If yes, then there is a possibility that the user account is corrupt.

    Refer the articles-

    Create a user account

    Fix a corrupted user profile

Do let us know if you need further assistance.

Once again, thank you for replying to my message. Last night I was looking at previous articles that were submitted online and I found one that gave the following advice: "The standard repair is to open Device Manager, expand the "Universal Serial Device controllers" category by clicking the "+" sign, right-click each device in the category, and select "Uninstall." Reboot the computer and let Windows re-detect each USB device."

Is that accurate though? Is that something I should try? Or I thought maybe I should try going back to a restore point, but I wasn't sure how to do that and if that would really be neccessary.

I did, however, follow the advice you gave me in your last message. During the reinstalling part of the process, it said the driver software couldn't be installed properly. I installed an update, but it's still saying driver software couldn't be installed. I followed the instructions that troubleshooter provided about seeing if the device is compatible with Windows 7 and this is the URL for the page I found:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compatibility/win7/CompatCenter/ProductDetailsViewer?Name=Mach%20Speed%20Eclipse%20CLD%202GB%20Media%20Player&vendor=Mach%20Speed&Locale=1033&BreadCrumbPath=eclipse&Type=Hardware&tempOsid=win7

That's my MP3 player and if I'm reading it correctly, it should work on my computer. Am I doing something wrong? I've tried everything you've told me.. I'm beginning to wonder if my computer is faulty or is this the works of a virus on my computer??
