Hi

I cannot get Windows Updates to install / configure,  I keep getting notified to install the same Updates  , I use Windows 8.1 , when I  try to install these updates it goes through the motions then after some time I get the dreaded "Failure to configure Updates, undoing changes, Don't turn off computer", if I  check update History it shows the updates installed then a short time later prompts me to install the same updates  , a recheck of Update History now shows that the updates failed, after previously showing them as being successful,   This has been ongoing for some time now , I right clicked on the updates and the  error code 80200001 appears on all of them. I am way past fed up with this, I am seriously considering getting my Old Mac back in service. I have tried everything , countless Windows fixes, to Command Prompts Admin re Computer failing to recognise Updates , this didn't work either, so anyone else had this problem and resolved it. any help would be great..

Did you (a) uninstall the Norton free-trialware AND THEN (b) download/run the Norton Removal Tool & reboot (c) BEFORE you installed a replacement application (e.g., the Bullguard application) AND BEFORE you upgraded the Win7 computer to Win8?

So your answer to the very specific, three-part question in my previous reply would be NO, is that correct?

    Firefox [v29.0 is installed]

    Chrome [v65.61.49249 is installed]

If all were well with your computer (it's not!), Firefox would have auto-updated itself to v38.0.5 (released 02 Jun-15) or v39.0 (02 Jul-15) by now - and Chrome would have auto-updated to v43.0.2357.130 (22 Jun-15) by now. [Google changed the version-naming convention several years ago so I have no idea where or how you got v65.x.]

That being said, were Firefox & Chrome already installed before you upgraded to Win8?

Thank you re warning Flash Player plug in. I shall upgrade immediately

Good luck. In Windows 8.1, Flash Player is kept up-to-date via Windows Update. See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/advisory/2755801 as well as https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/flash-player-issues-windows-8.html

    Hi

    1.  Norton free trial ware was uninstalled by myself , I  uninstalled it by going into my programs in Control Panel and clicked uninstall. I did this before installing the Bullguard  ,Windows 7 would have been the Operating system at the time as  this was done before Windows 8 was available.

    1. Firefox Version is 29.0 installed  on 29.4.14
    2. Chrome Version is 65.61.49249 installed on 12.12,12

Thank you re warning Flash Player plug in. I shall upgrade immediately.

     Regards.

    Brian.

Q: Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [pick one] come preinstalled on the [Win7] computer when you bought it?

A: Yes, Norton 30 day free trial, never activated.

    1. Did you (a) uninstall the Norton free-trialware AND THEN (b) download/run the Norton Removal Tool & reboot (c) BEFORE you installed a replacement application (e.g., the Bullguard application) AND BEFORE you upgraded the Win7 computer to Win8?
    • Fact: Norton (and McAfee) applications are notorious for not uninstalling (or upgrading) cleanly. The "leftovers" may be your troublemaker here.
    1. Is Firefox v39.0 installed?
    2. Is Chrome v43.0.2357.130 installed?

COMMENT: Flash Player plugin for IE11 hasn't been updated since you installed Win8.1 on or after 06 May 2014!  As such...

The computer should NOT be connected to the internet or any local networks for extended periods (i.e., more than a minute or two) in its current state. All business & personal data (including online banking & credit-card passwords) should be considered at-risk, if not already compromised.
