Windows Updates disabled java 8 exception list

We have been rolling out windows updates to our clients and it would seem (issue arose day after updates rolled out) all clients running java 8 now have problems if they have been adding exceptions in the site list under Java control panel.

  • All exceptions have been removed and the edit option is now greyed out!

I thought windows updates were meant to be there to secure systems, not destroy them!

Any ideas anyone?

Dave

    Hi AnonymousKOE,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

You can follow the steps below on how to unhide your files or folders:

    a. For shortcut: Open the Run command. On the box, type in %appdata% and then press Enter. If you have limited capabilities on your computer, follow option b instead.

    b. For Windows 7 or Windows 10:

    1.  Go to Control Panel

    1.   Click on Appearance and Personalization

    3.  Click on Folder Options (Windows 7) or File Explorer Options (Windows 10)

    1. Go to the View tab

    5.  Check Hidden files and folders, and click Show hidden files, folders, or drives

    6.  Uncheck “Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)"

          7. Click Apply and then OK.

Open File Explorer, go to Users folder and you should now be able to see the App Data folder.

To unhide it, right click the folder and then click on Properties. In General tab, uncheck Hidden, click Apply and then hit OK.

Feel free to get back to us if you need further assistance.

    Regards,

    Anna Bol

I, too, have this issue.  I upgraded my Windows 7 to Windows 10, and now the exception sites list button is greyed out.  I am not able to enter anything into it.

    Hello,

The cause of the issue could be any of the below:

    • Roaming Profiles may be enabled.
    • Users do not have write access to the deployment.exceptions.sites file.

Follow the below mentioned steps to check if Roaming Profiles are enabled

    • First launch the Java Control Panel.
    • Go to the Advanced tab.
    • Scroll down to the Miscellaneous section and verify if the checkbox for Store user settings in the roaming profile is checked. If checked, you can Uncheck the checkbox and see if the problems goes away. You may now be able to add URLs to the Exception Site List.
    • If you need to use Roaming Profiles you can go ahead and Check the checkbox again.

Confirm you have write access to the deployment.exception.sites file

    • Open ThisPC,
    • Navigate to C:\Users<User Profile>\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\security Note: User Profile will be the name of User Profile.
    • Now right click on the exception.sites file to check the properties.
    • Click on the Security tab to see the access rights for the user. If not, try to take the access permission to the current User Profile and see if it works.

Keep us posted if you require further assistance.
