Error message "Cannot create a multiple user file (WFL.DAT). You have not been granted full user rights for the folder."

I have tried everything except the right thing. I get this error message after upgrading to Windows 10 Pro v1803 when trying to start the app WordFinder (WFL in WFL.DAT). The file WFL.DAT exists on my computer in, most likely, the right places. (The app worked fine in Win 7.)

I have to be rather general: what do I need to do? I cannot even find privacy settings for individual users (only me at the moment, with Admin priviledges) or for individual applications (like WordFinder).

Thanks for your help.

Hans L

Melchizedek, I ran a compatibility troubleshooter in the shortcut, and that fixed the problem. I can now open WordFinder from the shortcut and by clicking the .exe file itself. This is probably the first time a Microsoft troubleshooter has done anything useful for me :-)

I wish to thank you for your assistance in this case. You went above and beyond.

Best regards,

Hans L

Thank you for letting me know. Let's try to always run the said program in Administrator mode, refer to the steps below:

    1. In your computer's Desktop. Right-click the icon for WordFinder and select Properties.
    2. Click on the Shortcut tab, and click on the Advanced button.
    3. In the Advanced Properties window, check the mark for Run as administrator.
    4. Click OK to save changes.

    Update me on the outcome.

    Regards.

    Melchizedek, thanks.

I opened as Admin and the program opened. However, I had plenty of problems with settings after that. I will restart computer and then do this again, and see how it works.

The reason I did not think of opening as Admin is that I always log in as Admin and I never had this problem in Win 7.

    I'll report back.

    Regards,

    Hans L

    Hello Hans,

I've researched the said error message above when using WordFinder and I wasn't able to obtain a more specific workaround. Also, many applications are named after "WordFinder". To better assist you with your concern, I'd like to know the following information:

    • Have you tried to run the application with Administrator rights?
    • Can you share a link where I can obtain the said application so I can also recreate the said issue? The closest I've found was from www.wordfinder.com.
    • It would be best if you can send us a screenshot of the said error message.

    Looking forward to your response.

    Regards.
