Printer Issue

Hello

I have a Fargo C30e card printer and am running Windows 10 version 1803.

When I attach the USB connector, the computer automatically installs the printer as a "Software Device".  The printer is not recognised by the computer and will not print.  It says that it has recognised the c30e card printer and installed the drivers for it... then it says it has been set up and is ready.

The printer simply does not work - but is still recognised as a software device in device manager.

I also have another Windows 10 machine but version 1709.

When I plug the same printer in with the same cable, it detects the printer and installs it as an 'Unknown Device'.  I then point the printer to the correct drivers on my system and it installs and works perfectly and is recognised in device manager as a printer.

HELP !!

a) why can I not get this to work on the latest version of windows (Version 1803)

b) Can I somehow move this printer from Software Devices to Printers

c) The ONLY difference in the two systems is the version of windows

any help would be very much appreciated.

    Hi Jim

    Thanks for continued help....

I guess what I'm most confused about is why, when I plug the printer in to the computer via USB, that it registers in device manager as a software device

on all other versions of windows, it has registered as an 'Other Device' and allowed me to install the drivers.  Even after a completely clean install of windows 10 it recognises the printer as shown above..... why a software device when clearly its a hardware device ?

    Cheers

    Michael

It's because the driver (hence the printer) isn't being properly recognized.  I don't know how I can make this any clearer.

Try Removing the printer from the registry and reinstalling it from the Manufacturer's website!

    Try this

To perform this method, you must:

Windows Key + R Key and Type

    Regedit

And Access the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SYSTEM / CurrentControlSet / Control / Print / Printers.

All Printers are listed within Printers, remove those you want.

    Restart your computer

After uninstalled, go to the manufacturer's website to install it again and get the latest drivers

We've already established that there is no Windows 10 driver for the printer, and compatibility mode is likely to be the best hope.

    Hi Jim

Thanks for taking the time to reply....

I HAVE got the printer working perfectly well on Windows 10 64bit machine running version 1709

its windows 10 version 1803 that is causing me the issues - so there is no issue with the driver im using

    Regards

    Michael

There obviously is an issue with the driver.   The twice-yearly feature updates for Windows 10 are essentially new versions.  What worked in 1709 might not work in 1803, as you've discovered.  If compatibility mode doesn't work, you'll either have to revert to 1709 or get a new printer.
