Unable to delete folder

Windows 10 Pro 1803, 17134.407.

I'm backing up my steam files again and I forgot about backing up F.E.A.R. to a different name unfortunately it looks like steam was able to not only create a folder with that name but chuck in a few sub folder with lots of files (20 files in two folders). Treesize can see the folder and sub folders but when I try to expand the folders everything vanishes and when attempting to delete the F.E.A.R. folder it has an error.

But when I'm in windows and trying to remove said folder it says there is an unexpected error (which could have happened previously but since I backup every year or two it has been a while). I tried to do the rd FEAR~1 trick but that doesn't work anymore either and while I did consider upgrading to 1809 to see if that would do anything I realised this was in the programs folder and not users (and probably crash the upgrade knowing my luck).

I've tried to use powershell's remove-item and even downloaded file assassin and that has an error detecting the file.

I tried to replicate the issue by manually creating a folder with the same name but windows always seemed to remove the last . (which I'm assuming is what's causing the error since I can delete those folders fine) so could someone please look at the method that steam is using to create the folder and get it to also remove any last . in folder names when creating them and hopefully patch it so I can remove this stupid folder.

I have more than enough space at this point so it's not urgent but it's ticking me off every time I go to move all the folders off to a portable drive and have to make sure I'm not selecting that folder.

Ouch, Quite a few of my games are old ones (civ 3, etc) where they are small in size but lots of small files but backing up 1.92tb wow. When copying large amounts of data like that I like checking the folder and file counts and comparing them to the original to make sure they match (and then using treesize to double check the size of the data).

But 14mbps for adsl must be great, I've always had around 5mbps at the few places I've been at and when I get a game/dlc and the update size if like 20-30gb that's me done with the internet for the day. Unfortunately the government came out with fttc at the last second and they don't even consider it for more regional areas which I consider crap (especially since they did stupid locations first like Darwin with fttp, which I have nothing against them but some cbd areas first maybe and see the cost/reward benefits and can get lots of people on there). Some places like Alice Springs I could sort of understand, hey getting the appropriate back bone down there is a tad costly so we are not going to do it, but most regional places it would be a lot better to get fttc setup (assuming the cost difference wasn't that much to fttn) so you can scrap so much of the old Telstra copper connection and then when the back bone gets upgraded nbn can offer better speeds for the town.

Oops - I lied. I only did a full copy/paste of a bit over 800GB. These were on the HDD that is mostly older games, but also has

an Origin folder, and a couple of UPlay games.

The second drive has several large games I had not got around to backing up yet including GTA5, FO4 & DIRT Rally.

The ones I had to compare sizes with were mostly in the Steam folder.  I decided to bring any older backups up to date to

keep Steam happy while I was at it . All up this probably added another 2-300GB of copy.

I've had Tree Size for years, but hadn't thought of it as more than a troubleshooting tool I never needed, but I see now I missed

an important function, so will be using it in future backup updates to make it quicker to find any new, or increased size files.

    • RE broadband. M'bah may be considered 'regional' by the telco's but I'm only 20+K south west of Tweed Heads, Gold Coast,

    so hardly out the back.

I had 20mbps when there was only 400M cable between me and the exchange. I'm on the other side of the hill now, and peak

@15mbps, but only since I changed from Beagle to iinet.  Beagle was good before moving, but in the new location I was getting

as low as 2mbps at peak times with average swinging from 8-12mbps.

They replaced most of the copper here just before NBN was announced as well, which has also helped.

Even on the Gold Coast I talked to someone in Currumbin prior to NBN who was lucky to get 3-5mbps because he was at

the top end of the border between exchanges.

    • The thing I hated most about Steam is mandatory updates. I bought FEAR when still on dial-up and couldn't play it  for a year

and a half because of  800+ MB in patches.

Took three or four months to play BF3, even single player, because of huge mandatory patches. I was on ADSL2+ by then but

with a download  limit of 5GB/ month (100GB now).

Now I hate Steam, Ubi & Origin equally because I still buy games on disc when EB has a good sale to avoid long downloads,

and recently I've installed two games that were fully downloaded again before I could play. Apparently they don't just patch

games any more without overwriting the whole thing.

This happened just a couple of days ago with FC5. 3+ hrs download after installing from 5 dics. A few weeks ago it was

    WRC7 ( $28- & $4- respectively @ EB so still worth the BS).

I think in future when I get a  bargain on disc I'll just try and use the code on their site and go straight for download.

Good luck with your folder issue.

    Cheers, mate.
