Can Windows 11 create a disk image backup using the "Backup and Restore (Windows 7)" application in the control panel? So Windows 11 backup using the Windows 7 application! The application is there in the control panel, nothing prevents its use. I tried on a laptop and then on a PC, it didn't work. The error message: "The RPC server is unavailable (0x800706BA)" The RPC server starts automatically and was running at the time of the error. The disk image creation failed

Thank You!

Thék György (Hungary)

Dear ,György Thék Welcome to Microsoft Community. That sounds incredibly frustrating, especially when everything worked smoothly before. There's no need to worry; I'm here to assist, and we can work together to resolve this issue effectively. Here are some steps you can try to resolve your issue.

    Use an Alternative Backup Tool

    • If the issue persists, consider using a third-party backup tool like Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper. These tools often provide more flexibility and reliability for creating disk image backups.

    . Update Windows

    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
    • Check for updates and install any pending ones, as they may include fixes for compatibility issues with legacy tools.

. Reinstall the Backup and Restore Tool

    • Open Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off.
    • Uncheck Windows Backup and Restore, click OK, and restart your computer.
    • Re-enable the feature and try again.

The error 0x800706ba can be diagnosed by inspecting the Windows Backup logs. However, the Windows Backup/System Image Backup feature is deprecated and no longer being developed or updated. A third-party backup solution, such as Macrium Reflect, Hasleo, AOMEI Backupper, or EaseUS, is suggested for greater reliability.

    From Microsoft:

Windows 7 Backup and Restore deprecated - Compatibility Cookbook | Microsoft Learn:

While there is no behavioral change to Backup and Restore, this function is being deprecated and will not be updated. It was rarely used and its functionality has been replaced by the new File History feature.

System Image Backup (SIB) Solution This feature is also known as the Backup and Restore (Windows 7) legacy control panel. For full-disk backup solutions, look for a third-party product from another software publisher. You can also use OneDrive to sync data files with Microsoft 365.

Can Windows 11 create a disk image backup using the "Backup and Restore (Windows 7)"

Backup and Restore (Windows 7) is not supported for making new images. It remains in Windows 11 so that people who used it to make images in Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 are able to restore those images in Windows 11.

B&R was deprecated in 2017 with the release of Windows 10 v.1709 which was also known as the Fall Creators Update.

    Image

As you see, Microsoft recommends a third-party product for making images. (The OneDrive app backs up individual files; it does not make images.)

Since that time, you will not find anywhere on Microsoft's website where B&R is recommended or even suggested for making new images.

This has not stopped people from trying to use B&R to make new images, and sometimes they succeed. However, since it's not supported for making images, there are no official solutions when it doesn't work well (or at all.)

As an aside: For something as critical as backing up, I will only use a supported application.

Thank you all, especially for the Hungarian-language answer! 2017, the completion of System Image Backup development was really a long time ago. I didn't notice it because it worked fine on Windows 10, and I installed Windows 11 only two weeks ago. I'm not happy about this situation, because I consider disk image backup to be almost the only sure way to recover from a possible system crash. I don't know how you would do it, because reinstalling the system, reinstalling applications, settings, configuration would be terrible for me. The price of third-party applications is alarmingly high at first glance. I'm in despair.

    Thanks: György Thék
