Duplicate Display not working

Hi,

Since yesterday I've been having problems with my Wacom in display settings. The connection is just fine but the display is wrong. I'm used to a Duplicate display setup with my main monitor's screen showing on my monitor and tablet. But when I connect my tablet now, it automatically goes to Extend display, and when I try to change it to Duplicate Display, the screen flashes for a couple seconds and says it's connected, until I press keep changes to which it goes back to Extend display.

My graphics resolution is 3840x2160 on my main monitor, the driver type is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 and the monitor is a Benq PD3200 any my Wacom is a Cintiq 16 at 1920x1080. The latest version is windows is 2025-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5063060).

I've already tried the following fixes to no success:

  • Reinstalled + updated NVIDIA drivers
  • Reinstalled + updated Wacom drivers
  • Uninstalled latest Windows update
  • Deleted drivers briefly from device manager
  • Used Win+P to select duplicate option, setting won't hold
  • Went into Registry editor to delete GraphicsDrivers folder. An error message popped up saying "Cannot delete GraphicsDrivers: Error while deleting key" - I restarted anyway with the same result, and trying to bypass that error bluescreened my computer. (I have it working again but the display issue is still there)

I tried calling Microsoft customer support this morning to help and they responded by hanging up on me, twice.

What else do I try? Can anyone give me a solution that hasn't been listed here? Am I missing something obvious? I'm pretty certain this is a driver issue as it still registers both monitors, and the pen on my tablet works as usual.

Thank you, any support is appreciated.

Hi, I'm Cherrelyn, an Independent Advisor happy to help!

Thanks for the clear screenshots they’re super helpful. It looks like Windows is detecting both screens correctly, but fails to hold the duplicate setting, reverting to extended mode instead. This often happens when your two displays don’t support the same resolution your BenQ runs at 3840×2160, while the Wacom Cintiq is limited to 1920×1080. Windows may struggle to mirror displays with mismatched resolutions.

    Here’s what to try:

1.Lower your main monitor’s resolution temporarily to match the Wacom’s:

    -Go to Settings > Display

-Click your main monitor (BenQ) and set its resolution to 1920×1080

-Then try to duplicate displays again.

2.If it works, you can then:

-Use Duplicate mode when drawing or screen sharing.

-Switch back to Extend mode when resolution matters more.

Let me know if you'd like help automating this switch with a script or shortcut or if it still won’t hold the setting after matching resolutions.

    Warm regards,

    Cherrelyn

    Hi Cherrelyn,

Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately, changing the resolution didn't fix anything-- plus, I've worked with the resolution carrying over just fine for years now. I don't see why that'd be an issue all of a sudden?

Hate to ask this out of nowhere, but am I talking to a real person or was that an AI generated response? Haha sorry if that's a rude question but you know, this day and age its hard to tell

    Hi Stars,

You’re absolutely not being rude it’s a fair and thoughtful question, and I appreciate you asking it directly. I'm a real person who volunteers as an Independent Advisor. I write my own responses, though I do sometimes use tools to help ensure clarity and accuracy especially with technical steps. I’m here to offer genuine support, and I try my best to be clear, personal, and helpful. As for your display issue thank you for clarifying about the resolution working fine in the past. You're right to question that! Since it used to work with different resolutions, this definitely points to either a driver conflict introduced by a recent Windows update or a display profile corruption.

Here’s what I suggest trying next:

    1. Remove Display Profiles via Registry (Safely)

Windows might be clinging to a broken display config.

    -Press Win + R, type:

    regedit - press Enter

    -Navigate to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration

-Expand this folder and delete all subkeys (they look like long strings of numbers and letters).

Just delete the folders under “Configuration,” not the “GraphicsDrivers” key itself.

    1. Restart and Reconnect your Wacom. Then go back to Display Settings and try Duplicate again.

If registry doesn’t work, create a new Windows user and test from there sometimes profile-level display configs break permanently.

Let me know how those go. I know how frustrating this is especially when it suddenly breaks something you've relied on for years. You’re not alone here, and I’ll stay with you until it’s fixed.

    Warmly,

    Cherrelyn

    Hey Cherrelyn,

I'm actually getting someone to look at my computer to help me troubleshoot from here, last time I messed with my directory I bluescreened my computer and had to do a hard reset so I don't trust myself doing that haha - don't suppose you could throw in a chicken noodle soup recipe in your next reply? I'd love to know how to make it. :)

    Thanks for the support!
