Removing file extensions

I have 200 documents that I have individually renamed, without the file extension. Suddenly today, every document has a file extension on it (.docx). The problem is that the extension takes up room in how the name displays - as it only displays so many digits. So now half the name of the docs aren't displayed and some longer names are totally obscured. All I did was go into those folders and print off a couple of those documents. Suddenly there they were - the extensions. On every document.

How do I get rid of the file extensions all together, in one step? There's no way I want to keep renaming each individual document each time this happens. Thanks for any help.

I'm on a Mac Sonoma 14.4.1 with Windows 10.

Are you using OneDrive or some other cloud service to sync your files online?

    Yes. One drive.

That setting in the Mac Preferences is the only method to hide the file extensions.

If you remove the file extension from a Word document, does it still open correctly in Word if you double click the file?

Yes - if extensions not displayed - it opens the docs just fine. I haven’t had file extensions on my docs for decades (I’m showing my age here….). Till today that is. Not sure how they can rely on self-driving cars, quite honestly, I have never found tech to be in any way reliable, mostly in the past 10 years. Constant glitches and trouble-shooting, it can be exhausting. I’ll try renaming every doc individually again.
